.22 magnum?

If it didn't already exist would it be worth inventing? Have one that shoots and handles well, but what little I read about it seems to imply that it's at best a sloppy compromise round that doesn't do a whole lot well. And yeah, the ammo's not cheap. Opinions?

It has been invented. The Winchester 9422 is available in .22 magnum. I don't know the ballistics of it over the .22LR model, but it is fun to shoot and very accurate IMO.

Well, I'd never dream of attempting coyote with a 22LR unless it was truly a defensive proposition.
I think it's a viable alternative to making the move to 22 Hornet. 222 or 223. There's some good an highly effective ammo for 22 Magnum, probably more so than for 22LR.

IMO, I think it's a good step between .22 lr and .223 Rem. Also less expensive than the centerfire calibers between .22 and .223.

there are times when a 223 or 22-250 are a bit much and the 22 l.r is just not nuff.enter the 22 mag.they are expensive as in 675 for 50 rounds hollow point at wally world.heck, you only need 1 shot on any groundhog out to 150 yards and its a done deal.ive shot some excellent varmit rifles chambered in 22 mag-remember the mossberg "chuckster" model 640k?designed for groundhogs specifically.i currently own a ruger all weather 77/22 mag with the heavy barrel.fine shooter.have gone fox hunting with a 22 mag,not as loud as a centerfire but had nuff umf to get them.works for me.

Those who would call the 22mag a compromise forgot what the original argument was about.

To clarify my statement, there is a big void between .22 lr and .223 Rem. There are centerfire calibers that fall in that hole but, like most other products, there is always a strive to be as good (if not better) but cheaper, thereby squeezing out your competition. A cheaper rimfire (with repect to the centerfires) would have fit the bill. The development would have been mostly done with the .22 lr, just go a little further with caselength and bullet profile. I think the .22 mag would have been worth inventing. Now for .17 Hor, I'm not so sure.

Yankytrash: Okay, that's your opinion of the critics (cryptic as it is), now what's your opinion of the cartridge? (If you say something like "If you have to ask you'll never know" then I'll assume you're preaching to the choir and I can't get there from here.)

The 22mag is THE round that packs a punch at those 1yd-130yd targets. Slow enough for expansion at most any range within it's limitations, fast enough to reach out there accurately for real-world game-taking.
She takes deer with the correct point of aim (head to neck) within her yardage.
She takes squirrels and still leaves the meat.
As a matter of fact, name any American game between the size of a deer and a squirrel, and I guarantee there's a 22mag killing it on a daily basis, without luck or extreme skill.
She's quiet as mouse in comparison to any other caliber that's reaching out that far effectively and making the kill.
While we're on the subject of quiet, the 22mag can be thrown into the weakest child's shoulder or the most worrisome woman's collar bone, and the recoil of a 22mag is not going to hurt them. The next best cartridge for teaching people to shoot, seconded only by the 22lr.
Sub moa? We gotcher sub-moa right here, and with the cheapest available ammo in 22mag, no bull barrels, no special triggers, just lock-stock off-the-shelf rifle and ammo.
You want light? Well, I don't know why you'd need to, but you can comfortably carry 200rd of 22mag in your front pocket.
I had my FN49's, my AR-15's, my lever actions, my Remmy 700's, and I still have my FAL's, my 12 gauges, my 45ACP's, my 22lr's, but when I'm hungry and I know I need to get a kill, I disappear into the woods with my 22mag.
Basically, the 22mag is the cartridge for the SERIOUS hunter, the man that has a definite need to put meat on his table, cheaply but without compromise. $150 guns and $7 ammo, that's what America's made of. Everything else is extra.

I like it. One can have .22 LR rifleballistics from a pistol barrel.
I've been pestering Kel-tec to make a P-32-sized .22 mag for the last three years.

Oh I know man. Searching through the pistol parts' kits at the gun show today, came across an old 22mag auto kit. Wish I could remember who made it now. Looked like crap and the barrel was dented and bent. At $75 it wasn't worth it, but now I have a personal mission to find that pistol in whole....

- - -about use of .22 Mag for deer. Rimfires illegal for this in many jurisdictions, including Texas and Virginia . . . .

I love my Marlin 22MN. I've been thinking about a 22 mag in semi-auto. I think it's a great intermediate round between the 22lr and a small centerfire.

Of course I'd never do such a thing Johnny, that'd be illegal. I only heard about that aspect of the 22mag from in, ummm, er, Switzerland. Ya, that's right, Switzerland. Got family there, heard through a friend of a friend of my brother's ex-girlfriend.
Yup, that's who it was. Dunno where he is or who he his, but that's what he said. I guess you could call my brother's ex, but she's researching monkeys in Madagascar for the next couple years. No phones there ya know. Maybe we can call her when she gets back. That is though, if the college she applied to in northern Siberia doesn't accept her right after her stay in the Galapigoes, er I mean Madagascar, then she might be hard to find. Ya, too bad she has good credentials. She'll probably be accepted, but it's only a doctorate in astrophysiology totalbssensationalism. Shouldn't take too long.
Would you believe my dog ate it?
Don't call me, I'll call you. Wait by the phone.
Uuuuh huh...
