Does anyone know what the rules are regarding having a shotgun on my boat, where I live, in the New York area (if that matters)

Salt water or fresh water? You probably want to consult the fish and game folks for New York and every state you plan to visit. Ditto for the state police.

Also recommend visiting http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/all+united+states. Scroll down to "Boats/Firearms/Coast Guard".

Might depend on the size of the boat as well. (I know, Its not the size... :p )
Here, in Michigan a boat that has a head (restroom) on it can be considered a second residence. Having one secured as you would at your primary residence should be no problem. A smaller, open, or sport boat designed for hunting might have different rules depending on the season. (i.e. Legal durring waterfowling seasons, a no-no otherwise).

I'd call the NY state police. I've done it before when traveling to NY to be sure of gun laws. They've been pretty good thus far.

Thanks everyone. It is a 41 Ft ChrisCraft Double cabin flybridge cruiser. There has recently been a bunch of break-ins and burglary in the marina and once even when the people were asleep in their boats!

Read the NY penal & environmental laws on shotgun possession. NY code is online.

Asking the state police is inadvisable - they're cops, not lawyers, and what you ask is (if illegal) likely an environmental law (different jurisdiction from state police).

IIRC (after much pouring over NY gun laws in great detail) shotgun possession is lawful so long as unloaded: get a sideshell carrier.

IANAL; talk to one.
