Well I have always used higher caliber weapons like .308 and 30/06 but recently I decided to buy a 10/22. Just came over me. So I'm just wondering what is the best kind of ammo to put into considering I have heard so many bad reviews of lead ammo. People who own 22's HELP!

I was using the Remington "Value Pack" of .22 ammo. Not bad, did have one FTF on it though, although that could have been my rifle!

Last weekend I bought some Federal .22 premium for .22 ammo I guess. It was .98 cents per 50 rounds at Wally World. I did have 2 FTF on this stuff, and firmly believe that it was the Rifle and not the ammo. I think the rifle has a bent firing pin. I'll have to take it apart to find out.

I would say the CCI Velocitor. Shoots great and good stopping power for varmints.

The best? Lapua or Eley probably. It is lead and it is expensive.

Eley Tennex, Ultimate SA, 22 LR, box of 50 40 gr RN 1085 fps $12.25

It's likely a waste of money in an autoloader though because of the loose chamber dimensions.

Seriously, start with a box of every cheap brand you can find and see which one your gun likes. Two guns with consecutive serial numbers can, and do, like different brands and lot numbers. Centerfire shooters develop different loads; rimfire shooters try different kinds of ammo.

If the cheap stuff doesn't work out start over with the mid-priced.
Save the leftover ammo because your next gun might like it.

Welcome to THR
Get every different bulk pack you can find and shoot your 10/22, have fun and watch for failure to fire. It can be accurate enough with bulk ammo for plinking and small game to 30 yds. 10/22s do not necessarily have loose chambers, unless it is used and abused.

If you really want to empty your wallet go to;

and search for ultimates

The best ammunition is whatever you buy that shoots accurately and reliably in your rifle

I'd vote for CCI stuff. Never had an issue with that ammo unless it was feeding in my aftermarket mags. Recently got a brick of Remington ammo, and it stinks--doesn't feed well, and the bullet itself keeps getting scraped on the bolt, so it doesn't fit in the chamber :what: . Might have been an issue with the mags themselves, though, they're old. But, CCI has my vote.

"Best" is a relative term. It depends on what you intend to use it for. If you're hunting the rare North American Coke can, the 550 round value packs are the best. For Olympic target shooting, the Lapua or Eley ammo is probably the only ones that'll be acceptable. For small game hunting (rabbits, squirrels, and such) CCI Stingers, Mini-mag's, Remington Yellow Jackets and similar ammo will probably be the best (but I can attest to the effectivness of Federal value pack ammo on bunnies out to 10-12 yards).

Congrats on buying a .22. It's the best investment in shooting you can make since it will allow you (in terms of cost and recoil) to practice litterally all day long. I wish I'd bought a .22 first instead of an 8mm Mauser.

I'll second JohnBT's suggestion for trying out the different bulk pack brands first.

The only issue with shooting solid lead bullets is that they can coat the chamber of the gun over time causing the gun to fail to properly feed (cartridge won't fully seat and when the pin hit it, it fails to boom). That and the bore can get coated with lead over time. It's not that big of a worry, but if it makes you feel better there's plent of copper plated and copper jacked ammo out there. FWIW I always shoot Federal copper plated high-velocity hollow point ammo (mostly becuase it's cheap).

Another vote for CCI. Pretty much all I shoot is mini mags and all of my .22s digest them without fail.

The Eley and Lapua hasn't worked well for me in autoloaders. I think it's only worthwhile in a target quality bolt gun.

Winchester Dynapoint available at the local Walmart. Shoots accurate and clean. I get sub-dime at 50yards with it out of my FrankenRuger.
