At the TacPro sniper match last weekend, we had the opportunity to shoot the AI-AW50 50BMG rifle with a JET suppressor installed. The recoil was comparable to a regular braked 50, but the blast and concussion were dramatically contained. Report was louder than a suppressed 308, but quieter than a regular 308. It could be shot without earpro.

Someone didn't have any money left over to buy a shooting mat. Wicked cool, even without the supressor.

Is this the same model that blowed up (asploded) on the British?

I expect so, but we weren't shooting for groups.

We were shooting reloaded ball and incendiary at steel at 500, on the clock, before transitioning to our rifle to engage a bunch of other targets.

Cortland,

I believe so. That incident was under investigation but I never heard the conclusion.

Awesome, thanks for sharing :D

The closest I'll ever get to an AI is if I get a Rem700 with the AICS stock, and even that is a stretch.

What kind of match is that? Did it involve rifles and pistols or were the sidearms just accessories?

mummac,

The match tested some of the skills the match director ostensibly thought a military sniper should have, including shooting the 50, a Colt SMG, our sidearm, and of course our primary rifles, and reticle-based ranging and surveillance. All events were "on the clock" and we had to carry our equipment around the match.

I posted the report over here in the Competition forum: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=144779

I take it from the position of cameraguy in post #2 that the muzzle blast is pretty well tamed with the suppressor? :D

There is none of the normal muzzle blast, nor the concussion normally associated with a 50. It is less than a plain-muzzled 308.
