I have been burrowing into places that no man has gone before .
Well maybe not for a long time anyways.

Two lefts and right.
Flint lock kits

Nice!

Do you collect them or do you assemble them too? I've always loved the idea of putting together my own BP rifle or pistol, but I've not gotten around to it financially yet.

What can I say, I like making things. I like to build them from scratch
or parts. I make muzzle loaders, breach loaders, and cartridge gun.
The picture that I posted is three flint locks, one assembled right hand
lock and two left hand kits.

I if you want to make a muzzle loader, start with percussion and a
pistol. Your life will be better. Don’t start with a C&B revolver.

Hang around your local gun shop. You can get barrel cut offs for
little or nothing. You can get new pistol barrels for $10 to $15. plus
postage. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/
I run across kits that some one started and never got done or parts
missing, or broken, that are in the back rooms of gun shops. Ask
around. Some times the shops will just give them to you.

It doesn’t take a lot of tools to make something. Remember
that the early American gunsmiths made there own tools.
Some actions, like under hammers are very simple.

Good advice all around... but here in MA, I've yet to find any "spare" parts laying around for cheap. Perhaps if I bought in Kittery ME.

Or maybe I'll simply wait until I'm in CT and mail order a kit. :) In either case, you've certainly refreshed my interest in building a BP firearm!

If I saw a cut-off octagon barrel, I'd think pipe tomahawk. :p

“ If I saw a cut-off octagon barrel, I'd think pipe tomahawk. “

Does that mean that your looking for a chunk? to make a pipe?
I do run across a lot of stuff.

Wow, that is really interesting. I guess thats one of the benefits of using a metal detector in a "history rich" area!

Did not intend to mislead anyone.
I have multiple storage units that I have STUFF in.
Lots and lots of stuff and more stuff.
I no longer remember all what’s in them. That’s the
location that I was digging, burrowing, rummaging in.

Tinker2. If you can get a length of discarded octagon rifled barrel, I'll take it. I tried making a hawk once, but failed miserably. I don't have Popeye forearms and the hammer was too heavy for me. One of my instructors used a 5 lb sledge hammer to forge with too. Since then, I found a smaller hammer that I could wield all day at Friendship, IN.

You going to put it on a ax? You are going to hammer weld it?
What size octagon would work for you? Do you care if it is rifled
or not? How short is to short?

I plan to make it into a pipe tomahawk. Rifled is preferred as the remains of the lands & grooves will show up in the pipe portion. About 6" is all I'll need. Thanks if you can get it. :neener:
