Dublin Ireland wants to arm officers?

I guess that I am not as well traveled as I thought. I just returned from vacation to Ireland and had a great time reading the news paper. One article really caught my attention in general.
The head of Garda (police) in Dublin wants to be able to arm his men because of the rise in Eastern European gangs and drug violence in the city. One thing is that he has to ask permision to do so, secondly in my bubble of USA I thought the good guys could always shoot back.
Where else can't the police carry guns?

In Britain they pretty much stopped carrying guns. Of course, the cops want them back now.

In Mayberry, N.C., LEOs can carry firearms, but unloaded only. Each LEO gets one bullet to carry in the left breast pocket.

An, P95Carry, being an immigrant, you missed out on the Grand American Television Show known as The Andy Griffith Show :)

Played by Don Knotts, Fife was a hyperkinetic but comically inept counterpart to Mayberry's cool-headed Sheriff Andy Taylor. He was allowed to carry only a single bullet, and that was kept in his shirt pocket.

Yeah, even I remember re-runs of Andy Griffith.
Barney: Andy! Otis ain't in his cell!
Charles Bronson (As Andy): I shot him.
Barney: What???
Charles Bronson: Now I'm goin' down to Emmett's fix-it store to "fix" Emmett.

I thought that was a spoof run on The Simpsons?

Did British cops ever carry guns as a matter of routine? One of you is bound to know the answer to that.
The police here seem to reject the idea of routinely carrying, there are armed response units. On my first holiday abroad (France, at about 14) I was a little unnerved by the gendarme's and their pistols, never had any experience of it. Was a little more unnerved couple of years later by the the bobbies and their MP5's at Birmingham International.

I didn't think British cops ever carried as normal procedure.
I guess you would love the open carry states in the US.

In Micronesia police are not rountinly armed.I also think Tonga is that way as well.In fact,I believe many of the islands in the Pacific have LEOs who are not armed.

I've just returned from the UK and Ireland myself. I saw quite a few handguns on the local LEOs. I was a bit suprised because I was under the impression they were normally unarmed.
