Favorite Rimfire?

The favorite rifle thread got me thinking.. what's your favorite rimfire and why?
Mine is a Marlin 39a Golden. It's my dad's rifle and its a sweet shooter. Of course it takes all day to load 18 long rifles in it but it shoots like a dream. Second is a bit of an odd-ball, a Belgian Browning Grade 1 take-down 22 rifle. It spits brass down your shirt sleeve, its too light, andi always forget to flip up the rear sight. Even so, I can still perforate a pop can at 50 feet with every trigger pull from that dandy.

CZ-452.
It is like a laser for squirrels.
I have a 3x9 on mine, and if I can see it, it is dead.
Last year, one of the little beasts tried to hide behind a dead, rotted out cherry tree so I couldn't shoot him.
I could see the edge of his head sticking out, so I aimed and fired.
I love fried squirrel...:D

I have a weakness for fine rimfires.....
Probably would be the Winchester Model 52.....currently have four of them....like the accuracy of the target models but love the elegance of the sporters.
Also have a couple of Voquartzen 10/22's that are fun plinkers, Tom does some beautiful work.
.22 handguns....haven't found anything I like more than the Smith & Wesson Model 41's...
Someday I'm going for a Dakota Arms bolt action.....

My Ruger 10/22. Why? Probably because it was the first .22 cal. rifle that I bought when I was a young lad.
So you could say that it is based largely on sentimental reasons, I guess. ;)

Right now I love my BRNO #4, but it's really a toss up. I'm with Rembrandt on the Winchester 52; I’ve a late model sporter and I love it, some day I’ll get around to an early C model.
If I’m feeling like a cowboy I’ll break out the Marlin 1896 with the octagon barrel.
If I’m feeling high-tech I’ll shoot the benchrest Sako P94.
If I want to pretend I’m in the Olympics it’s the Anschutz M64MPR full house rifle.
I guess my favorite is the one I’m shooting at the time.

My favorite is a Mossberg 151M, about a half century old. I like it because I can compete effectively with it against my pals that have tricked-out 10-22s that they have spent $500 to $1000 on.

Posted this once before i think ..... awful background color .. sorry! This is a Mauser Obendorfe, apparently made in 1920's .... it is quite heavy and at a glance looks more like a .270, until you see the small mag and bolt!!
Superb .22 ... quite the best (apart from actual target rifles) I have had and would be loathe to part with it. Got it off a buddy years ago for about $120 and seems it could be worth nearer a grand these days.

Ruger 10/22T. The heavy barrel kills any and all recoil, allowing me to dump 10rds inside the 8 ring at 50 as fast as I can pull the trigger. or maybe I should say it would allow me, because I'd never break that silly :cuss: 1 shot per 2 seconds rule at my range to find out...... :p

I own a Remington Model 12 made in the 30's, a Remington Sportsmaster made in the 40's, and a tricked out 10/22.
I like em all, but my favorite rimfire is my Savage .17HMR.
I can shoot dimes at 50 yards and quarters at 100 yards all day with that thing. It makes me look so much better than I am:D

Dr.Rob, I've got 3 .22 rifles. Of the 3, my favorite is also my Marlin 39A Golden. I like the way it looks, feels and shoots. It's no wonder it is the oldest .22 rifle still in production.
You said, "Of course it takes all day to load 18 long rifles in it ...". You might want to try a little trick I use with it (and a Marlin 60 or any tube magazine). I load up soda straws with .22 cartridges and when it's time to load the tube, just remove the follower tube completely and insert a straw in the top of the tube mag. Obviously one end of the straw needs to be plugged; I've used tape and safety pins, both work well. The straws I have found locally hold about 10 LR rounds. I usually load them with half the capacity of the rifle, so a couple of straws and your loaded and ready to go. Most straws aren't wide enough, but I have found a good supply of wide ones at Arby's. I hope they standardize on the same type everywhere.

Three, now, and all are German. A Walther Model 2, semi-auto or (if you push the bolt down 15 degrees) single-shot.
A Mauser single-shot training rifle; looks like a Model 98.
And the old Schutzen.

I hate to admit it, but I only have one rimfire (that I shoot) right now and it's not so pretty. Very effective though.
Marlin 882-SSV heavy barrel 22 Magnum with a 4-12 scope. I've used it a lot but I really wish I could get the trigger a bit lighter and smoother. Funny, now that we live out where I can shoot anything I want any time I want, I mostly find myself following squirrels with this rifle and taking the shot... with no ammo loaded. Little guys are just so darn cute.
I really have a hankerin' for a Kimber or a Cooper if I find one for the right price. Funny, most Cooper owners tend to keep their guns. ;)

This "J.C. Higgins" .22 was my late Dad's rifle.
It's a Marlin Model 81.
I shot it with him once when I was about 4 years old. Never saw it again until last summer when I ran across Dad's friend who gave it to me. Dad's been gone since 1975. I'm now 47, so you can imagine how pleased I was to get this. ( It and a Winchester 94... :what: )
Considering the history of the gun, it is my favorite .22.
In the picture, the stock has been very unprofessionally sanded down by me. It is currently being refininshed by someone who knows how to work with wood! I'll get pix of it when it's done.
I found a place for my Tasco High Country 4-16x40 scope and the B-Square bipod for now, though.

I got the 39A late in life through the kindness of a friend selling it to me. It has become my all-time favorite rimfire, but I grew up using my Dad's 241 Remington, which was the domestic remake of the Browning. I owned two more of them along the way, but the Japanese Browning was far better than the Norinco clone:eek:

Mine's my sub MOA shooting Marlin 25MN. Can't believe how well the rifle shoots or that I was able to buy it with a scope for less than $150. It has to be one of the best deals I've ever gotten on a used firearm. A close second is my Marlin 60, another great buy.

No one has yet mentioned my favorite .22 rf rifle, the Browning BL-22.
It's a short throw lever action tube magazine .22 that will shoot shorts, longs, or long rifles mix and match.
With the stock iron sights and the handy 18" barrel, this is a wonderful plinker in the woods.

I'm with you on the BL-22. I've read a rumor that they were supposedly introducing a 'cowboy' version with octagonal barrel. However, I just picked up an '03 Browning catalog and there's no such animal.

Ahh man VictorLouis- I read your post and was scrambling for my wallet, then I finished reading. Nuts.
I love my Marlin 1896 Cowboy, something about the straight stock and octagon barrel, the only thing I don’t particularly like is that the action is pretty stiff and the BL22 has always been super smooth.

my favorite is my weatherby mark XXII w/factory scope. the fit, finish, wood and operation is all up to the standards of their center fire rifles. it is a beautiful example of "california monte carlo". it really feels like an "big game" rifle.
the most fun to shoot is quickly becoming my romo 69. it looks battered, beat and neglected and then stuns folks by how well it handles and shoots.

one more vote for the BL22. it was my first gun and it was a tackdriver out to 100 yards. and there's just something fun and nostalgic about a straight stocked lever action with an exposed hammer. i wish i wouldn't have sold it.

Mal, neat trick. Not that it really takes that long to load a 39a. And p-95 that is one wicked looking Mauser.
I always liked the idea of a full sized rifle in 22, like the ruger M77/22. never bought one but a good idea.
Until I can afford a Marlin 39 of my own, I'm content to plink squirrels and the occasional prarie dog with a Marlin model 995. It's inexpensive, its gone through 2 recoil buffers and I've shot the barrel pin loose before, but its a good shooter.
5 shot group, 100 yards, .22 cal Marlin model 995, Federal High Velocity 40 gr round nose bullet. Weaver 1.5-4.5x variable fine crosshair scope.

On my 9th birthday, my dad bought me a used Marlin Mod. 60 (with the squirrel on the grip) and a Tasco 3-7x scope. That was in 1972. There wasn't anything I couldn't hit from the time I turned 13 and had finally grown into it, to the last time I seen that rifle. Man, we had fun with that .22. It made so many dead soda cans that I don't think Coca-Cola could count them all.
I ended up getting divorced in '98, I moved back to Utah, and the ex- stayed in PA, with everything except my clothes. That includes the Marlin. When my Dad died in '99, he thought I still had it, and I didn't let him think any different, because we talked about our shooting days of long ago while he lay on his death-bed.
I should be recieving it soon, I just bought another Marlin Mod. 60, and a 3-7x tasco scope. I know it's not the one my Dad got me, but it's as close as I can get, right now.
I've been devising a plan to get MINE back, but I don't know if it will work.
So for me, the Marlin Mod. 60 is my favorite rimfire, and not because of accuracy, handlability, 18 shot tube, or the squirrel on the grip, but because of love.

My fav rimfire is my Ruger 10/22 project gun. Lots of fun collecting parts and installing. I'd like to get this as my next Ruger project: You think it would be legal to hook up a lil electric motor to a joy stick with a trigger and rig it onto that crank. That would be FUN.

I think the motor might cross a line somewhere.
My favorite is my tricked out 10/22. Too bad the PA Game Commission won't let us hunt with semi-auto rifles in this state. It'd be straight murder on squirrels. That's why I keep my Remington 581 around....slower, but just as accurate.

My favorite rimfire(s) are my two Remington 592Ms. They are incredibly accurate, with perfect, crisp triggers. They shoot the Remington 5mm rimfire cartridge, which is, unfortunately, no longer in production and costs a buck apiece when you can find a box of them. I do have about 1000 rounds, and I don't shoot the rifles much anyway.
Because of the ammo issues, when I do shoot a rimfire rifle, I end up shooting my Ruger 10/22 Deluxe Sporter, with a Volquartsen trigger group and a Leupold VX-II scope - a pretty good rifle.

Appearance and sentimental-wise, my J.C. Higgins .22lr that I inherited from my dad, which he got for his 13th birthday I'm told, and did the checkering and white spacer himself, is my favorite (really accurate too). However, practicality-wise, I really love my (was also dad's) Marlin 25MN .22 magnum.Very accurate out to 150 yds, comfortable and fun to shoot, and has that extra ooomph a .22lr just doesnt have for making easy, clean kills on small game without destroying the meat, or having to pick tons of lead shoy out of the meat or destroying the hide.

The winner is my Steyr Zephyr mannlicher, a well-made, accurate little .22 (one of two .22 rifles that I have that wears a scope) that is my favorite squirrel/woods rifle.

I have a new Savage, Mark II, .22LR, bolt action. This cheap ($139.00) rifle, has a black plastic stock and carbon steel receiver/barrel. The removeable magazine holds 10 shots.
I fired 10 shots of Remington Thunderbolts, off-hand at 25 yards, using the iron sights. The group can be covered by a dime. That's not a bad little .22 rifle. I do have the target, but no pics of it at present. Imagine...$139.00! The only draw-back in my mind is that it was manufactured in Canada. :(

Marlin model 60 , very accurate right from the box, cheaper than dirt (got mine used for $50) semi-automatic, and very hardy.

I've got enough .22s that I'm going to have to pick three:
First, the 10/22. What more is there to say? <1/2" groups at 50 yards, and the 25-round TI magazines I got for it recently have made it more fun than ever.

I got this Savage Striker several years back. It was dirt cheap. The factory trigger was horrendous, but with a Rifle Basix sear it's shaped up to be fairly accurate. It's an eye-catcher at the range and a lot of fun to shoot.

I have a DPMS dedicated .22 upper. It is a blast. It's far more accurate than I expected and very reliable, even with subsonics.

I know I said three, but what the heck, here's a fourth, my 77/22. With subsonic ammo dry firing it is louder than shooting it (no joke!).

Honorable mentions would have to include my 9422 and Winchester 1906. And my Browning Buckmark rifle ... :D

I haven't posted this before, so here's the 60's vintage FN made Browning I grew up shooting alongside dad's Marlin. Mom still lets me borrow it once in a while. Pretty no?

22's, you have to love them. It has never made any sense to me what so ever for someone to want to start with anything else when they are learning to shoot. 22's are great for the newbie and the seasoned vet as well.
My current favorite is a Remongton 541-S rifle. I am counting my money for a new Weatherby Mark XXII (bolt action) and am looking forward to a new 22. My second favorite is a Weatherby Mark XXII (semi-auto) 22 rifle. Guess I like the higher end 22 rifles.
