Trunk Guns

After all the talk I've seen on here about truck guns (or trunk guns), I decided to put something together for my trip to the lake and any other long road trips. I don't have many rifles to choose from, a Romanian M69 is a wee bit small, my k31's sights are off, my chicom SKS is an unreliable POS :cuss: and my Finn M39 is big and bulky. Out of all this, I chose the Finn.
Here is what I've got so far...

Nothing more than an old rifle case and issue cleaning kit, I've filled the oil can with windex. I only pack 20 rounds, five of it soft point. I figure this will be more than sufficient. I sorta doubt I'll run into any towelhead-ninja-islamofascists. :scrutiny:
I'm planning on adding a small container of grease and some cloth pieces to clean with, if necessary. I would also like to add some 'hook and loop' attachment points inside the case to keep the ammo and kit from flopping around. Any other suggestions?
And before you say it, Jobu07, I've already thought of adding the bayo. I'm just not sure I would need it! :neener:

IMHO, that gun is too pretty for a trunk gun (and probably too expensive to lose) - my trunk gun was an Yugo SKS, until someone decided to bash my window in and take it. I learned two things:
1. If the contents of your car are worth less than the replacement costs of your windows, leave your doors unlocked
2. If you have a sub $100 milsurp, use that for a trunk gun
After that incident, I started using my M44 Mosin Nagant - it cost me $69 with 100 rounds of ammo, and it'll be a cold day down below before it fails.

 You never know when you'll need to make a bayonette charge! Personally, as much as I love the M39, i'd ditch the big Finn in lieu of something else. Hey, it's the perfect opportunity to buy a M38 or 44 ;)

I've been thinking the same thing. Unforunately, I don't have the money for and M44. The local gun shop here is a bunch of blood sucking leaches when it comes to firearm transfers. My 21st Bday is next month and I've already got the C&R papers on my desk....god waiting sucks.
Yes, its a pretty rifle. It's also the one with which I'm the most comfortable. I merely think of a point-of-impact and the rifle responds. It only goes into the car for long trips because of this. :(

I'd go with the M44 Carbine. J&G has them for 69 FRN's. And the bayonet comes in handy for roasting hotdogs.

I think riding around with A gun in your trunk(truck) is just silly.... :neener:
I carry SEVERAL guns at all times...never know when you might need to arm a friend
I just bought an FR8 thinking I would use that as a truck gun, but then decided they are gaining value/becoming rarer, so I will ahve to rethink that prospect...decisions, decisions, decisions.
Maybe I should buy matching M44s or M39s for the trunk...think the wife will buy it?

Frankly, I think the SKS is the best way to go for a trunk gun. I used to like the mini-14/30 idea, but the SKS has grown on me quite a bit. They're real cheap, ammo is cheap, there are various doodads for them if you like, and they're usually pretty tough rifles. I also kinda wonder about power. The main reason I can think of for needing a trunk gun would be to quickly dispatch an injured animal. I wouldn't want something in a full-power battle rifle in case I miss and hit something hard.
But, if you're careful, I think your M39 will work just fine.

Are you allowed to carry ammo in the same case as the gun in KS? I've always carried ammo in the car and had my guns in the trunk. I'm in Ohio, though.

By law in Michigan, gun and ammo can not be carried in the same place. Firearms must be inaccessable to occupants. Ammo kept away from the firearm.
Example: If the car has a trunk, the rifle would go there but the ammo would have to be kept in the passenger compartment. Same for vans, suv's, wagons. Guns in back, ammo up front.
When it comes to Pick-up trucks that do not have an extended cab then the firearm should be cased and behind the seat. Ammo goes in the glovebox or someplace that does not allow easy access( range bag on the passenger side floor, tool/truck box in the bed, etc...
Check your state laws.

Some of these laws are just plain ridiculous. What good is an unloaded gun?

No such sill laws here in I-De-Ho.
Guns can be transported loaded and ready to go.
My CCW instructor is also a Fish and Game warden, tells of all sorts of knuckle heads that jam on the breaks at inspection stations and all he would hear is "BANG" when the occupants are trying to un-load there rifles in the cabs of trucks.
Only to find out that it is completely legal to have loaded fire arms in vehicles here.
Know your laws.

I agree with CPT obvious, that M39 is far too pretty for a trunk gun. Find out why your Chicom SKS isn't functioning properly, and fix it. Peek in at www.sksboards.com , they have whole forums dedicated to the Chinese SKS, and to troubleshooting SKSs', you should find some help. I have a Yugo M59/66A1, and it performs flawlessly. It's the truck gun, and my '46 Izhevsk M44 is my car trunk gun. $50 gun show special, can't go wrong. ;) BTW, check out www.russian-mosin-nagant.com also, it's a great site with loads of info on Mosins, and milsurps in general. :)
