Star BMs from SOG: condition?

I am getting the itch for one of these neat high-quality 9mm pistols. SOG still has them for $140/1 $130/2 or more. At those prices, I may get a spare gun for parts. The guns are said to be in "good to very good condition", with a hand-select option available for a sawbuck or so. I called and asked for clarification, but only got the NRA definition of "good" and "very good" read back to me. Having never ordered anything from SOG, I am not sure how honest they really are about the condition of their merchandise.

I realize these are surplus that have spent a long time riding in holsters, so worn blueing will be par for the course. However, the possibility of pitting worries me a little. Has anyone ordered a Star BM recently from SOG?

Also, check out those surplus Walther P5s and CZ82 in 9x18 Mak.

The ones I have seen had no rust or pitting. They have finish wear but the bores and everything else is fine.

These are one of the best buys in a handgun you will ever find.

They are quality.

That can't be possible because I have been informed several times on the Highpoint quality thread that no other decent guns exist for that sort of price. :D

The 2 Star BM's I've seen from SOG have been in great shape. Light wear on the blueing. Great gun at a great price.

The Star BM is a great little pistol. It's my favorite 'small gun'. It's a good shooter too.

Try one and I'm sure you will like them too. My .02 !!!

I've got one, and I love it. I think mine is more-or-less typical--a fair amount of carry wear, but shows very little evidence of being shot much at all.

Nice, all-steel 9mm pistol for under $150. Gotta love it.

Sounds like I should probably get a pile of those things. Should probably pick up one of those CZ82s while they last. Now, all I have to do is come up with the money . . .

Bobby Lee, once you add shipping and FFL fees they are not at that price anymore. Find me a Star BM for that price outside of Ohio, and then you can be as sarcastic as you want.

That is what I did. I got two from AIM and never needed the extra one for spare parts yet. :) They are very high quality and a very good deal. Like another member said, they may be the best deal in a handgun that you will ever see. When they are gone, they won't stay $140 for long.

One of mine is the most accurate 9mm I have ever shot! It has a match grade trigger and will shoot a one hole group at 10 yards. The other is way above average in terms of accuracy and has never jammed. I have had one or two FTE jams in the super accurate one. Cond. was about 85% on both of mine and I think the SOG ones would be about the same. A lot of finish wear but they don't look to have been shot much. I have not seen a badly pitted one yet at any of the gunshows or gunstores so I think the cond. I got mine in was about average.

Nowhere. They used to be made in Spain, but the company went belly up.

I can be as sarcastic as I want because almost every gun show I attend I can find the Star BM pistols from $140 to $150.

I paid $145 for mine out the door.

If I had been 5 minutes quicker I could have bought a nice one in a pawn shop Saturday for $130. A guy was buying it when I came in the door.

It is not my fault you guys pay more for your guns.
Look around a while before you buy. There are bargins out there if you look.

I have a friend in the music business. He can afford any gun he wants but he has carried the same Star BM for years.

It has proven very reliable and he shoots it well so for him it is a good choice.

I haven't seen a BM for less than $160, locally. And darned few guns of any sort at that price. And I don't think I've even seen a BM at a gun show in the last couple of years....

I have seen lots of over-priced Lugers. I've seen some CZ-52s, all selling in the $175 range, when you can get them with a C&R license for $100 +/-... The gun show dealers seem real proud of their guns. The only good deals seem to be Bulgarian Maks... for about $170.

Star BMs are good guns. Star Firestars are good guns. (The extractors for the .40 models are just about impossible to find, though.)

The Star Firestar Plus is an ever better gun, as far as I'm concerned. I've had three, all traded away for what I thought were better guns -- but I just swapped a digital camera (with a member of the THR Forum) for my latest one -- in hard chrome. With three hi-cap mags.

I picked my first Firestar Plus up for $125 in a pawnshop. I almost ran out of the store. The dealer later said he screwed up letting it go for that price. (It was mispriced.)

But these sort of prices are lucky ones -- they aren't always available -- I've looked and looked since that first Firestar, and haven't found one for less than $225, since. I suppose you can find them BMs for less than $160, but they're not common around here.

I suspect the "market" you're in is an uncommonly good one for inexpensive used guns.
