Does anyone have any information about Savage Model 5s? I just got one, and I'd like to find out when they were made. There's no serial number, so I'm pretty sure it pre-dates 1968. I'd also like to find a manual, or at least disassembly instructions for the bolt.
I've been told it's the same as a Mossberg 255, but I can't find that Mossberg ever had a model 255. I've also found information that it may be the same as a Stevens (Springfield?) 86 (C|CD|D|E), or a 66C.
It's a bolt-action .22 with a tubular magazine. It can take .22 short, .22 long, or .22 long rifle.
Thanks.

Savage built the Model 5 between 1936 and 1965, but at the same time, they were also producing "branded" guns under other names for retailers like Sears, Coast-To-Coast, etc. That being the case, I wouldn't be surprised to seea rifle identical to the Model 5 only marked with a different name and model number. IIRC, the Blue Book has a cross-reference table showing what it would've been known as under those other names, but I don't have one at home, sorry.
