View Full Version : Too much fun, can I blame this on sm?

My son's brother in law, Charlie, called last night and wanted to know if I would like to shoot a round of sporting clays this morning with him and his friend Shawn. Sure, why not? But I'm taking my 28 ga 870 just for fun. Loaded up 125 rds this morning and went out. This is only the second time I've shot sporting clays.

So we shoot the round, I had a great time with the little 28, even though I could have done a lot better with my 12 ga Citori. Not the gauge or the guns fault, I'm just a lot more familiar with my Citori. First two stands I shoot 2/20, then I get into the groove a little bit, end up with a 31/100. The little gun will smoke 'em if you pay attention.

We finish up about 11:00 and go cool off in the clubhouse, when these guys walk in right behind us. Guy, a good customer of mine. Will, who has done three roofs for me. Keith, who owns a local sporting goods store, and one other guy they called "Zonk" or something. These guys are all friendly and not a bit snobbish, which was what put me off last time I shot SC.

Anyway, they suggested a round of five stand. I'd never done it, nor had Charlie or Shawn, but we were game. Chunk Youngblood, the manager, came out and ran the traps and gave a few tips.

"You're gonna use a what? A 28 ga PUMP?"
"That's all I brought"
"Do you have a 12 ga?"
"Yep, a Citori."
"Where is it?"
"Home."

I don't think I hit more than 5 or 6 out of 25, but I sure had fun doing it, and it was impressive when I could break one at 50-60 yards with that "little gun".

Anyway, thanks to the friendliness at the club, I think I'm hooked. Sporting clays is a blast, and five stand is challenging enough that I need to go back, maybe with the Citori next time. Also, I was informed next time we would be shooting "flurries".

I may be out there next Sunday.

:D :D <---- Me, when I got home.

Thanks for the grin, Larry. Flurries with a 28 gauge 870 sounds like as much fun as one can have fully dressed and standing up. Let us know how it goes.

I'll wager the usual flagon of mead a few more rounds see those scores climb. You're using an action style you've not shot much of recently if at all. You're shooting a much lighter shotgun with little inertia to keep the swing going. And, you're shooting a lighter load of shot, so the effective width of the pattern HAS to be less if density is to be kept up.

Betcha you're hitting 50% in five more trips to Sporting Land!!

Yeah Dave, I haven't used a pump much since uh... 1971 when I bought an auto. And then, 20 years ago, I got my Citori and haven't used anything else since.

It came back fairly easy though. Yesterday I started out having to tell myself "pump!" after the first shot. After 100 rounds or so, I was telling myself "shoot again!" after the first shot.

Like riding a bike, I guess. Never did learn when I was a kid, pavement was in short supply where we lived.

Still, you BA/UU/R a few more times and it will feel like you never stopped.

Keep shooting flurries and I bet you'll be doing better then 50% in no time. I need to get out and do some myself.

Yes you do, anapex, How's Saturday look for you?....

Too much fun, can I blame this on sm?

Yes you can, but it's OK...Steve's used to it.

Sounds like fun. I'm still up to my elbows in alligators, guns are rusting in the cabinet, I hear their frustrated cries of agony everytime I walk past the safe. I have got to get them out and stretch their legs. 5 stand would be good exercise for them...especially in Colorado.

Saturday looks great Dave! I'll start warming up the TC and Beretta with some practice mounts. :)

Sounds good, here, expecially those practice mounts. How about early before it gets really vile?....

about the "to much fun" question...

Sure, blame it on "sm". I think he is wearing his t-shirt marked "Guilty Party Here"

Larry - I can see the grin from here!! Great too you can choose to blame all this on Steve - he won't mind he's got broad shoulders. :D :D

I do think for five stand your Citori will do great - and probably screw in your full choke too. Ages since I shot some clays - well, a full session - just too much on in summer.

OK, we're on. Maybe some others will want to play.

Smoke, I doubt if it is much better here than there. Been around 100 every day for the last few weeks (though it gets around 60 at night). If you're ever through this way though, I will take you out and treat you to a round.

Dave and Anapex: With some notice, I would like to shoot with you guys in MD sometime. My SIL works for Frontier airlines and I can usually get a CHEAP trip anywhere they go.

Chris, still grinning! I have this Sunday free, Sandy and I are talking about going out again.

This must be the only forum when the question "Whose turn is it to buy this round?" refers to shooting rather than shot-glasses... :D

Larry, that'd be great! I'd definitely like to meet ya. I'm minutes from BWI, I'm not sure if Frontier flies in there but that'd be the easiest place to come in (IMHO) if they did. Better practice your flurries though, Dave likes to shoot them and I gotta hold up my end as being the worst one shooting them!

We'll be glad to have you, Larry. My work schedule is vile, but mayhap we can work things out.
