My son's brother in law, Charlie, called last night and wanted to know if I would like to shoot a round of sporting clays this morning with him and his friend Shawn. Sure, why not? But I'm taking my 28 ga 870 just for fun. Loaded up 125 rds this morning and went out. This is only the second time I've shot sporting clays.
So we shoot the round, I had a great time with the little 28, even though I could have done a lot better with my 12 ga Citori. Not the gauge or the guns fault, I'm just a lot more familiar with my Citori. First two stands I shoot 2/20, then I get into the groove a little bit, end up with a 31/100. The little gun will smoke 'em if you pay attention.
We finish up about 11:00 and go cool off in the clubhouse, when these guys walk in right behind us. Guy, a good customer of mine. Will, who has done three roofs for me. Keith, who owns a local sporting goods store, and one other guy they called "Zonk" or something. These guys are all friendly and not a bit snobbish, which was what put me off last time I shot SC.
Anyway, they suggested a round of five stand. I'd never done it, nor had Charlie or Shawn, but we were game. Chunk Youngblood, the manager, came out and ran the traps and gave a few tips.
"You're gonna use a what? A 28 ga PUMP?"
"That's all I brought"
"Do you have a 12 ga?"
"Yep, a Citori."
"Where is it?"
"Home."
I don't think I hit more than 5 or 6 out of 25, but I sure had fun doing it, and it was impressive when I could break one at 50-60 yards with that "little gun".
Anyway, thanks to the friendliness at the club, I think I'm hooked. Sporting clays is a blast, and five stand is challenging enough that I need to go back, maybe with the Citori next time. Also, I was informed next time we would be shooting "flurries".
I may be out there next Sunday.
:D :D <---- Me, when I got home.
