Or if you want a 14" 870, do you have to buy the 18" or 20" model, do a Form 1 and cut down a barrel, etc?
P.S. anyone know if just the 14" 870P barrels are available to non-LEO?

CDNN was selling a truckload of short barrels a while back, but they insisted on the buyer having the paperwork done before the sale. They turn up on eBay from time to time, same caveat.
Seems to me an extra four inches of barrel is an awful small sacrifice to avoid that much expense, not to mention hassle, for as long you own it...

Agree with Lee. AND I went to an advanced shotgun class with a PD that all had 14" with rifle sights. Their patterns with buck was not as good as the 18 and 20" guys in class and their distant slug shots were not that impressive.
I'd say the only reason to have a 14" gun is getting in and out of modern sedans, entering building, and maybe on board a boat for hold and passageways or in VC tunnels!

Yes, you can get them.
Either complete guns or the barrels alone.
Obviously, Remington does not sell anything to the general public. Remington sells to wholesalers who sell to dealers who sell to you.
The barrels are no problem to get. If you normally buy NFA weapons, you probably have an NFA dealer that you do business with. Any dealer worth doing business with would order you one of those barrels and hold it until you get the tax stamp back.
Personally, I am going with a custom barrel in the next couple months. I have a Vang Comp gun that I never shoot so I registered it as a SBS and am having Vang make me a 14" barrel.

Sorry, I've misstated what I'm trying to do. I didn't mean me literally ordering it from Remington. I just meant does Remington allow their factory 14" 870s to be purchased by the public, through a dealer. Sorry for the confusion...
I was just thinking that if I could order the factory 14" shotgun, it would be a little nicer than having mine engraved with my name and having the barrel chopped down.

Yes, they are sold to civilians; my understanding is that the primary market for those is civilian law enforcement.

Contemplating doing something similar. If he goes that route, does the $200 tax get collected twice (first for manufacturing, then for transferring)?

If you bought the Remington from a dealer as a SBS, you would just pay the one $200 transfer tax.

i think it is 5.00 to TRANSFER it to the buyer. The initial 200.00 is "built in" to the purchase price when the weapon is sold to the dealer. That is how it was explained to me but again this is only an opinion.

The $5 transfer tax is for an AOW, not a short barreled shotgun with the full stock. For an AOW, there was never a $200 tax, built in or otherwise.

Looks like Wilson Combat will cut your 870's barrel down to 12.5". :D
