Now that the AWB is over, can I enlarge the capacity of my P226/.40's mags from 10 to 12 simply by swapping out for a different follower, or someething equally simple, or do I need whole new 12rd mags?

Usually there are. Mags produced during the ban could not be readily convertible. Most times there were crimps, dimples, or the like on the mag bodies to prevent the capacity from exceeding 10. Some mags were setup so that if you removed the crimp, the body would fall into two pieces. I think you're going to be stuck getting the new production mags, former LEO mags, or some old prebans.
