How is it that an organization with such an obvious political slant and agenda can be tax deductible and the NRA can't? Sigh...

Well, heck, I think we should all R.S.V.P. those courageous leftist extremists to let them know we'll be there, checks in hand, and they'd better not forget to order enough champagne and French snacks.

i gather the MD-TRTs counter protests at the Omni-Shoreham and the Ronald Reagan Center have driven the Brady-ites to seek the protection of an armed guard.

Every washed up (excuse me, I mean seasoned) second rate celebrity seems to be listed.
Art Buchwald, sheesh!
I mean bless his heart that he's still around, but has Buchwald written anything since 1962? Ben Bradlee, of WaPo Watergate fame? Gotta be kind of long in the tooth by now if his "Boy Wonder" reporters look like they have been "rode hard and put up wet".
Can't Sarah crank up any A-list people anymore? Where's Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Affleck, Barbra Streisand and all the other anti-gun types from Tinsel Town? Where's Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and the other high profile glitterati types that haven't retired yet?
Maybe Sarah and her team's 15 minutes are up and they have all moved on to greener PR pastures? Maybe it's hard for Hollywood types that make movies full of guns to stand up and speak against them?
Nah, they generally seem to be able to adjust their world view at the drop of a hat to suit the press opportunity of the moment.
Perhaps it will be like her last couple of fundraising attempts, where the TRT protesters outnumbered the attendees and they didn't want any pictures of the empty tables. Only the McKelvey's of the world buy a table and then a handful of lower level people from his organization grudgingly show up for a free dinner and Art's re-heated jokes about public figures from the Truman administration.
Hint to all attendees, I was trapped into hearing Buchwald speak at a conference in NYC a few years back. Don't sit in the first three rows, it gets wetter than a Gallagher concert.

That thread title scared me. I thought I'd suddenly lost nine years! :D
I guess I could seek their advice and judgement: Should I rely on my Lilliput .25ACP, or on my Redhawk?
With apologies to the Dundee: "That's not a gun; THIS is a gun!"

Someone needs to go take photos of the security force and show the hypocrisy in evidence.
Heh, too bad we can't send teams of "thugs" to make like, almost but not quite a mugging (standing close, asking for change, following, diverting into dark alleyways, but not actually comitting a crime) and see how many of them pull a defense gun... would take some cojones though, because I'll bet more than one have and are willing to use.

That is a good question, what is their basis for tax exempt status? The NRA has the Friends of the NRA that is their charitable arm, but being a FNRA chairman, I know I can't talk about politics at all at our function or I could jeopardize the entire organization's tax exempt status. The Brady Center sure seems like a political organization to me, what gives?

Don, I wonder where you came of the opinion that Affleck is an anti-gunner? I was recently reading some of his statements and while he did shill for Gore and Kerry, he has made strong statements in support of the 2nd Amendment:
Affleck: Yes, I would say I'm a moderately liberal guy. I mean, there are things that I agree with the Democratic Party. There are things I don't. For example, I'm not a big gun control guy. I believe in all the bill of rights, including the Second Amendment. I'm not a party guy one way or another. I don't believe in subscribing to that. I still believe in people more than I believe in parties per se.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,127324,00.html
Q: You recently applied for a gun permit in Georgia. Are you a hunter?
Affleck: What I hunt are pigeons, but they're the clay variety. And let me tell you something: Those clay ones are tricky. A lot of clay ones have gotten away. I don't hunt live animals, but I do some target practice -- and mostly skeet shooting, clay pigeon shooting. Which is a lot of fun.
Q: Maybe the gun will scare off some of the paparazzi?
Affleck: I like that. I feel that the framers of the Constitution envisioned the Second Amendment as a remedy to the excesses of the first.

So is he talking out of both sides of his mouth? Or has he supported the anti-gun agenda elsewhere, perhaps advocating "sensible" gun restrictions? His statements above seem pretty clear however.

the Brady's are coming!
the Brady's are coming!
the Brady's are coming!
5 pm on Sept 28th
Some weeks ago, the Second Amendment Sisters (SAS) raised the idea of
a protest against the French Embassy's support for banning guns in
America. Accordingly, SAS has obtained the permit for the protest,
and Paula Miller, SAS's DC Coordinator, has been listed on the permit
as the contact person for the protest.
As the listed contact on the permit, Paula has been contacted by the
US Secret Service and given some guidelines for protesters, which she
has quite properly asked to be relayed as widely as we can. Her text
is below, and it is followed by information from the Second Amendment
Sisters for anyone whose radar has not picked this up yet.
I am sure that the sensible and correct reminders about good
behavior, that will reflect positively on all gun-owners, are already
well within everyone's intentions. In previous years, the Second
Amendment Sisters' events in downtown DC have all gone smoothly, and
everybody knows what makes for a good image versus a poor image.
We hope to see you there!
---- Following text is from Paula Miller ---
Regarding the gun rights protest at the French Embassy on September
28th:
Since I am the contact person on the permit, I was just contacted by
a member of the Secret Service who is in charge of embassy security.
I know that you all will behave properly, but there are a few things
I need to communicate and that you need to know if anyone plans to
attend the protest on Wednesday Sept. 28th
1. All protesters MUST remain on the other side of the street from
the embassy property. Failure to do so could result in arrest.
2. Any blocking of access routes in and out of the embassy property
is not allowed. Failure to comply could result in arrest.
3. Any acts of civil disobedience (which I strongly DISCOURAGE) need
to be communicated to ME in advance, so I can let the Secret Service
know of this and they will plan accordingly - they are there just as
much for our protection of our right to free speech protest as they
are for the embassy's well being.
Therefore, anyone who wants to be arrested must PLAN to be arrested
and the Secret Service with coordinate with the MPDC.
I would HIGHLY DISCOURAGE any acts of civil disobedience or any
behavior that could lead to arrest. I think it is imperative that
gun rights representatives behave in a self-disciplined and exemplary
manner. We are not a bunch of loose cannons, and should behave
accordingly.
Any questions? Call me (202-646-5846) - I don't guarantee I can
answer them all, but I can try. Also, I am NOT organizing this
protest, so any questions about that will have to be re-directed to
the appropriate person.

Background:
On Wednesday, September 28th, the French Embassy in Washington, DC is
hosting a fundraiser for the Brady Bill. SAS is holding a protest
outside the embassy and needs all the people power support it can
get. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, Sept. 28th and come
out to the protest and show your pro-gun support. Location and time
to be announced. (See below for a complete article, and a sample
letter to the French Embassy from the Second Amendment Sisters.)
LAKEWAY, TX -- It's billed as a birthday celebration for famed
columnist Art Buchwald, but this party's main purpose is to raise
funds for an organization determined to deprive Americans of their
basic human right of self-defense - with the French Embassy providing
the venue for the occasion.
"This isn't about having a fundraiser. Everyone has them," said Deb
Altrath, Co-Founder and President of Second Amendment Sisters. "This
is
about the French Embassy hosting a fundraiser for a group that will
use
those funds to deprive American citizens of their constitutional
rights."
"If this were for AIDS research or cancer research, that would be
different. But it's not. The French Embassy is aiding and abetting
the
destruction of the United States Constitution by hosting this event
for
the Brady Campaign," added Mari Thompson, another of SAS's Co-
Founders.
The Sisters have drafted a letter of protest to the French
Ambassador,
and are urging others to do the same. The letter is available for
viewing at SAS's website, www.2asisters.org.
Second Amendment Sisters is a women's advocacy group dedicated to
preserving the basic human right of self-defense.

Text of SAS's letter to the French Ambassador
July 12, 2005
Ambassador Jean-David Levitte
Embassy of France
4101 Reservoir Road NW
Washington, DC 20007
Mr. Ambassador:
It is our understanding that the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence
is
holding a combination birthday celebration and fundraiser at your
embassy in Washington DC on September 28th of this year. The intent
of
our letter is to voice our objection to your embassy hosting this
event.
The goal of the Brady Campaign is to deprive American
citizens of their right to privately own firearms for any purpose,
with
the assistance of the politicians and celebrities listed on the
event's
committees. The fact that you have chosen to give this destructive
cause a venue tells us that you support their efforts to disarm
American citizens.
Our organization, Second Amendment Sisters, is dedicated to
preserving
the basic human right of self-defense, and the right of the American
people to keep and bear arms as stated in the Second Amendment of our
Constitution is essential to being able to protect life and liberty.
France does not enjoy popularity among Americans at this time because
of its weak stance on world terrorism. We cannot see that your aiding
and abetting the destruction of the United States Constitution in
partnership with the Brady Campaign will improve matters.
If you support the Brady Campaign and their mission, please know that
you find yourselves in direct opposition to nearly 100 million
Americans who are gun owners.
On behalf of those nearly 100 million gun owners, we ask that you
reconsider hosting the Brady Campaign's event.
Sincerely,
The Board of Directors of Second Amendment Sisters, Inc.
