I have a Smith and Wesson model 10-5, serial number D3815XX. Closest I can figure it was made between 1962 and 1977. Can anyone narrow it down? I don't think it's the heavy barrel version, it is pinned.

Once I cleaned it up, it really shines. I haven't owned a gun that's blued like this.

Sir, I edited your post to take out the real SN and replace the last two digits with XXs. I'm also getting my S&W book right now. I should be able to give you a date.

1971-1972, if I'm reading this right.

Related question. I received an old 10-5 from my father-in-law and it has two serial numbers; one on the butt and the other in slot where the ejector and cylinder fit. What's up with that. Also, when I get home, I would like to check the # against age. I think it C6677XX or something.

Coronach, much thanks. I'll go with 1971. since that's the year I was born. ;)

The number on the butt that starts with "C" is the serial number. The other number is an assembly number stamped on the yoke and frame to insure that the right part got back into the right frame after both were either blued or nickel plated. Parts that don't interchange between guns are always marked in some way.

C6677XX would place it at 1963-1965, I believe.

Thx, Mike. It shoots well and was free from my father-in-law, so it's all gravy. Had rust damage but The Armory in Virginia Beach did a good job of cleaning it up. I will wait a while before I determine whether to invest any $$ toward a rebluing. thx again for the response. Larry
