I haven't shot rifles very much and I haven't been a hunter (lived in DC 10 yrs) so I'm not familiar with whats available semi auto in .308. Obviously on the high end theres the Springfield and Browning BAR and Some semis based on assault rifles, are there any mid priced $400-500.00 semi .308s that are more hunting/sporter rifles, it would be for my in-laws and I'm not sure if they would be comfortable with a CETME or something like that (altough I think it would be just what the doctor ordered) anyway I'd appreciate any help in narrowing the search, tried search feature in classifieds for .308 and it came up with a huge list of ads. Thanks

A .308 Saiga comes to mind.

IIRC, they can be had for under $500

CETME is actually on the cheap end (along with Saigia .308, etc); for something "mid priced" I'd say look at a PTR-91 from JLD or StG-58 from DSA, or a .308 VEPR from Robinson Armament. On the high end you've got the SA-58 from DSA, Springfield M1A's, Bushy .308, etc.

Remington 7400 (http://www.remington.com/firearms/centerfire/7400wd.htm) (new) or 742 (used).

that are more hunting/sporter rifles
Yap, Remington 7400.
The Super VEPR .308 is a battle rifle well-disguised as a "sporter", but it more expensive than "mid" ranged, and is hard to find. The Saigas are battle rifles semi-disguised as semi-sporters.

And you're absolutely right.

I think Walmart has the Remington for under $500, you can also find a good used BAR for that price, other than military looking rifles that's about all I can think of.

Having owned a Wally World Rem7400, I would save my pennies and get the BAR.

The Saigas stock were designed to circumvent the pistol grip restriction that applied to the AK. It has the same receiver.
Dunham's (are they national or regional?) has them on sale most of the time under 250.00. IIRC, sometimes they have them for 179.00.

I have a Saiga .308 on layaway that I got for $359. They are quite well made.

I dunno, i got my Saiga as a gift :D . But, they rock if you can get a good scope on the things (accurate enough to warrent one, even for an AK mechanism-rifle). Or, maybe a CETME or something, if you want a pistol grip and magazines other than 8 rounds.

Is the ATF part kit ban going to kill the SAIGA?
