From the Alexandria Town Talk, LA (http://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050712/NEWS01/50712001/1002):

Child injured in traffic stop

A routine traffic stop Monday night ended with a 3-year-old shot in the thigh and two Alexandria men arrested.

Keldric Mitchel, 19, was arrested on charges of negligent injuring and Kedrick Winnfield, 23, was charged with a traffic violation, Alexandria Police said.

Around midnight Monday, officers stopped the car Mitchel and Winnfield were traveling in on Monroe Street, after the vehicle failed to stop at a red light. According to police reports, Mitchel was trying to conceal a gun from the officers when it went off, striking the child in the thigh.

The child was a passenger in the car.

The child was taken to a local emergency room for treatment.

that the gun in question was legally acquired or posessed, are you?

Idiot with a gun? Yes, but a more accurate headline would probably be:

Criminal wounds child with illegal weapon

I have no idea whether or not the gun was "legally acquired or posessed" - the report doesn't give this information. Also, we don't know whether or not the owner had a prior criminal record or not. However, legal or not, criminal or not, the owner was still an idiot!

It's legal to have a loaded handgun in your car in LA, so he was either a felon, or just criminally stupid (likely both).

If it were any other kind of stupid, reckless behavior, the leftists would be clammoring for $$$ to be spent on education. I don't agree that that is the solution to every societal ill. However, if this idiot had been educated that it is not illegal to possess a handgun in your vehicle in Louisiana (unless otherwise prohibited) or TO KEEP YOUR BOOGER HOOK OFF THE BANG SWITCH, this might have been prevented. Remember, it's for the children!

I vote illegally acquired and/or possessed.

Too bad the child had to pay for the guy's stupidity. He should have shot himself instead...between the legs. Karma sneezed on that one :barf:

Oh well, at least it wasn't in South Louisiana where we consider Alexandria to be yankee territory. There's something about red dirt and pine trees that chemically alters the human brain. :neener:

Hopefully Keldric and Kendrick will wise up a bit in the joint.

I agree with you on that one.

If you South Louisianans are so smart, how come y'all head our way whenever the wind starts to blow down there? At least we're savvy enough to live in a place which we don't have to leave! :D

That may be right, but why do all you "stick in the mud" North Louisianans head down south for the GOOD food and to have a GOOD time? lol

Just goes to show what a gun can do in the wrong (clumsy) hands.
Guessing that since this upstanding citizen :banghead: was trying to hide the gun, it was illeagl. Hope he has to do some serious time for child endangerment/abuse. Unlawful/unsafe discharge of a firearm, and all sorts of other charges all the way down to spitting on the side walk. Just hope the kid makes a full recovery and doesn't grow up with the idea that it is OK to just throw a gun around. Have to handle those things with some respect or they will bite back! :what:

If there courts are anything like ours in Jeff Davis Parish, he will probably rat someone else out, and have his charges dropped.

Cajun,
Unfortunatly, the court system seems to work like that everywhere. :(
The guy will probably get out of it with some slap on the wrist, then go get himself another gun. :banghead: Then he can go shoot someone on purpose. Instead of accidently.
