My Norinco based MEUSOC 1911 replica is almost complete. A problem arose with the feed ramp on the frame. The previous owner had apparently decided to do the typical dremel feed ramp polish and over did it. My smith was able to do Tuner's trick of smoothing the bottom of the throat back at an angle to reestablish the gap of .032 inch. According to her it feeds just fine now.
I plan on installing a new barrel (Wilson or Bar-Sto) at a later time. My question is whether this is a temporary fix or it if it should be fine as is? If I install a new barrel it will need to have the similar modification. Am I better off just welding the ramp up before a new barrel is installed? At what point is the ramp considerd unsalvagable and only corrected with welding or a ramped barrel? I will try and get pics if I can.

If cutting back the stock barrel worked, I don't see why it wouldn't do the same with an aftermarket barrel. How much had to come off? What does your gunsmith (gunsmithess?) say?

EGW will weld up and recut the ramp for $60. They also have an insert that they can mill a recess for and pin in without heat.

She said it is ok. It just makes me nervous when people start shaving away metal on a barrel in such a vital area.

My FLG does it pretty regularly, wear and so many different makers lead to a lot of slop in fit and tolerances. Not to mention Bubbaizing in your case.

I saw a pristine Commander at a recent gun show. Pristine until I took off the tie and opened the action. The feed ramp looked like it had been worked over with a dull rattail file. The vendor was not amused when I offered him half price to allow for the cost of a feed ramp insert and loss of originality on an early gun.

Awhile back I bought a Colt off the intenet and some turkey had used the dull rattail dremel on the barrel, to the extreme. About 3/16 in of the underside of a case was unsupported. Fortunately he had not messed with the ramp as well. Replaced the barrel and alls well, but lost money on that deal.
