I went into Big 5 sporting goods... (since CA's wally-worlds dont sell firearms anymore) Anyhoo I was looking at the shot guns, and they had a Mossberg 500 12g on display. This was a "Combo" package it comes with 2 barrels, a 28' ported, and a 18.5'.
I figured I can use the shotgun for skeet shooting , and home defence, nice!
I looked at the price, 299.99. You may or may not know that Big5 always has sales on their guns. Usually, if you ask if "thats the best price they can do" they will look on the computer, and sell it to you for the "sale price" (if the guns is already at the sale price, they cant go lower)
Anyway, I was able to purchase the, New, 12g Mossberg 500 Combo, for 229.99. I just had to buy it, what a great price. Came home and looked on the net just to make sure I really did get a good buy...
In the end I paid 270$ (229.99+25.00+Tax). Looked on gallery of guns, Gun Broker, and Auction Arms. Best price out of all three was 315$, non Combo.
I should have asked this before I bought it but, any problems with the mossbergs I should know about?
What are prices on this gun where you live?

Sounds like a more-than-fair price to me.

yep, now that you have one your other firearms may suffer from neglect.

The barrels fall off after 7 or 8 shots.
I'll give you $75 for it and save you the pain.

A base price of $229 is excellent for the combo. Around here (NY State), you'd pay around $200 for just the gun and one barrel.
$315 for a Mossberg 500 with one barrel is nuts. I guess there are no deals online anymore.
What's the $25 for? Is that a CA transfer fee or something?

IIRC, I payed almost that much for my 500A (20", 7+1) HD gun, and considered it a good deal.
As far as reliability, In 35 years of shooting I've never owned anything but Mossberg 500 variants...Some I bought "well used" and proceeded to shoot the heck out them (trap)...Never had a single problem with any of 'em...Pretty much as reliable as a brick...

I bought a 20ga Mossberg 500 for my kids and it seems very well built and have had no problems with it at all. I'm toying with the idea of buying the adult stock a bit early so's dad can play a bit with it. :) $229.00 is a great price for the combo, especially here in the land of gun stupidity. Big five can be a good spot to pick up long gun bargains.

The $25.00 are the state fee's. (DROS Fee, dealer record of sale)

toivo. You are correct. That is DROS (Dealer's Record Of Sale) fee we in CA get to pay for each firearm we purchase.

I have one. I like it. Never had a problem with it. Fired everything I've put through it w/o a problem. I just put on the Knoxx CopStock. I'm gonna try it out this weekend.

All new Mossberg barrels except riot gun barrels seem to be ported now, even the rifled deer barrels.
Apparently they invested a couple million in a CNC porting machine and intend to get their monies worth.
You bought a decent shotgun PB, comparable to any other pump gun being offered today.

Vega,
Check out Mossberg's website www.mossberg.com/pcatalog/model500_1.htm (http://www.mossberg.com/pcatalog/model500_1.htm) or see their catalog at your local dealer.
They've got combo's in 12 ga with wood furniture. I know, 'cause I got one.

Sounds like a pretty good price for a combo. I just paid $150 for a pretty new used one. Mine has the ported 28" VR barrel. The ports are very effective...in increasing the time it takes to clean the gun. ;) I hope yours has nicer furniture on it than mine. I had someone at Trap last night that didn`t believe it was even real wood! Oh well I didn`t buy it because it was purdy.
The darn thing works good though! :) Marcus

Yeah, I know. What I meant was, Big 5 doesn't offer the 12ga with wood furniture, only the 20ga.

Vega,
See if they'll order one for you or you can always try putting a WTB here on THR in the Buy/Sell/Trade section or look on www.gunsamerica.com (http://www.gunsamerica.com ) If there's a will there's a way !!!!

Good price for around here too. I use a 500 for a duck gun - at least when I'm hunting alone, the ports are VERY effective for directing the blast noise back into the blind. I've taken to using a plug in my left ear when hunting with that gun.

I just heard back from big 5, vega's right, it's not wood. :banghead:
In my head, I thought it had wood ..."furniture." :uhoh:
Oh well.... perhaps that will make shortening the stock a little easier? Since I believe its hollow, Could put some weight in their too to help with recoil .. :scrutiny:

Ok, I am unhappy with my purchase now, I went back their to pick up my gun. They bring me out, what I thought was the wrong gun, (since it didnt look like the one I was looking at on the rack) I tell the guy, I did not want that one, but that one (pointing at the one with the Mossberg500 combo tag) He looks at the shotgun, then the tag, well thats the wrong tag :cuss: switches it with the tag of a different mossberg. :fire: :cuss: I get to look at the one I purcahsed... a vented rib barrel NON-ported, 1 choke tube, came with the 18.5' barrel of course..... damit damit damit :banghead:

So the Big 5 combo guns come with a synthetic stock, a 28" ported barrel, a 18.5" barrel, and 3 chokes tubes?

The first rifle I bought at big 5 was taken right off of the shelf, and into the box they had in the back.
This shotgun I bought was not taken down from the rack, instead the guy went to the back, and got a new un-opened one. The only time he opened it was when he looked looked for the saftey lock, and model #. (I should have asked to look at it, but I was looking at one of their rifle bags)
...10 days later...
The only time I got to see it is when he was finishing the paperwork, he took out the shotgun and asked me to make sure the serial number on the gun was the same written down.
...
I still took it home :scrutiny:
....
Sorry for the mis-information guys :cuss: :banghead: :fire: :scrutiny:  :(

Hmmmm.... THREE choke tubes are pretty much Standard Issue with a Mossberg 500 w/a 28" VR barrel.
I've got both Ported and Non-ported 28" barrels with my 500's the only time I notice is the difference is in the duck blind.... (PORTED = LOUD !!!)
