Yes it comes off if you unscrew it.

Yep, you clean half from the chamber and half from the crown. Just make sure you use a guide when cleaning from the crown so you don't damage it.

They all screw in. Apparantly yours is filled with gunk. Disassemble your rifle and give it a good cleaning.

you have one from a different stye of rifle, and its too short to reach the threads.

The Japanese Arisaka only was a few inches in length and was attached to a long rod that was shared. The Finns included a brass extension in the cleaning kits for their Mosin rods. The Brits and Americans said to heck with it and issued pull cords. The variety of means is almost as wide as the variety of actions!

Try pulling it out, it may not be screwed in and is just being held there by cosmoline glue (also, the cosmo glue could be gunking up the female threads in the stock preventing you from screwing it in).

I've had a cleaning rod that was screwed in break off at the threads while shooting (I ended up getting a new stock anyway for other reasons, so it wasn't an issue), so yours could be broken. You won't know until you remove it (there should be threads at the end).

My Mauser's cleaning rod isn't being held in by a screw system--there's a button kinda thing that has to be depressed, then you can pull it out. However, mine also comes undone when I fire (I just push it back in :) ); it too is not long enough to clean from one end (not that it matters, the screw-on grip is gone :o ). However, mine also has a problem with the foreward ring that holds the top handguard sliding foreward when I fire :what: , so i just hammer it back down. Not a big deal for a rifle I bought for $100, but if the cleaning rod is your biggest worry, there's not too much wrong with your rifle.

Mines a turk mauser. Ill pull it out again and see, but im betting the threading broke off. Ill check...

It has some really worn threads, and the rod is bent pretty bad. I just pounded it back in, easier than trying to find the right depth and screwing it in.

I heard it click too when I put it in. Several clicks actually.

If you buy three Mausers you can thread the three rods together, and it's long enough! ;)
