M1 Garand: A couple of questions...

Hi All,
1. Anyone ever buy a wood-less Dane M1 from the CMP and assemble it? Do they just need a stock set? Where can you get a stock that includes the metal parts? Would you need a gunsmith the fit the stock to the gun?
2. Can you gauge the muzzle wear from this picture (PIC # 1)?
3. Do you know who made the 7.62 M1 barrels for the Navy when they did their conversions? A guy selling a 7.62 barrel on the internet (SEE PIC # 2) says they were converted in Pakistan using the original H.P. White Laboratories bushing...Is that true?
Thanks!
TCW :)

1. You can get stock sets from Boyds, Dean Gun Restorations, Doug's Stockpile, etc. For the most part, you have to buy the stock metal seperately. New manufacture stocks sometimes require minor fitting. This includes sanding or filing away wood in the trigger housing area to get it to lock up. Most people do this themselves and isn't very difficult.
2. The bullet test isn't very accurate. If the muzzle doesn't swallow the bullet, then that's good. But as far as getting an actual muzzle wear number, you'd need a gauge.
3. I'm not exactly sure who made the barrels for the Navy 7.62 Garands, but I'm sure it wasn't Pakistan. Some of the authentic Navy Garands in 7.62 (including Trophy rifles) are seen with barrels made by Springfield Armory. But that picture seems to depict the appropriate restamp markings for a 7.62 conversion barrel. You'll probably want to post that in the CMP forum to see if you get more accurate feedback.

Woodless Danes are junk. Don't buy one unless you plan on rebarreling. I went throught probably 100 of them at the North store, very, very few would gauge as well as 3+. Maybe 5 or 7. At least the Greek and US racks had a bunch of good gauging ones mixed in.

Thanks for the info fellas!
Yea, the Dane would be re-barreled. I just figured instead of getting a rack-grade, I'd save $60 and get a decent stock...

Their website is kind of on the spartan side, but I have seen Springfield Sporters, Inc. run adds in Shotgun News showing lots of M1 parts for sale, including the metal parts that attach to the stock. You might want to call them and see what they currently have in stock.
