I'm looking into getting one of the DPMS .22LR conversion kits for my bushmaster XM-15 A2. But i'm conscerned about the following:

Reliability: are these things reliable?

Side effects: will shooting a lo9t of .22LR through my 5.56 upper cause any problems in the long run?

I'm a college student and cant seem to scrape up the money for .223 as often as i'd like so i can go shooting. i figure the conversion is a one time buy and although thats a lot of .223 i can get even more .22LR for that money.

I plan on shooting .223 still though and wonder if there will be lead fouling or somthing else that will give me trouble.

I'd apreciate lots of input.

guy at the range next to me yesterday was shooting a DPMS dedicated .22lr upper. Ran great with a red dot and looked cool until he got a terrible jam that ended his day. When he finally got the jam out the .22lr case has been ripped apart and it failed at the base. Don't know what happened, but it looked fun while it worked.

Meanwhile, my $66 NIB Magtech 7022 .22lr (same as Mossberg version) rang my steel target @ 150 yards all day long w/ no malfunctions. It just doesn't look as cool as the DPMS.

If you are just talking about converting the bolt group and magazine and running it in a "regular" .223 AR15 upper then you will have two issues to contend with.

1) Accuracy will suffer since the bore is larger then the bullet.
2) You will build up crud in the gas tube.

Now if you are just plinking the accuracy is not all that bad and if you take the time to shoot a couple of .223 rounds out of the gun after a .22 session you should burst all the crud out with no problem.

I went with a dedicated upper with no gas tube because I had planned on using my DPMS .22 indoors quite a bit and therefore running a .223 round through wasn't going to be possible.
