Questionable parts replacement..

There is a lot of talent and experience on this and other forums. As well as a lot of opinions. The 1911/BHP/Glock platforms have created lots of aftermarket products. Some are advisable, maybe. Some are useful, in a specifically defined context, such as Bullseye, IPSC, IDPA, etc..Some have created revenue and jobs, sent a few kids to college, etc..
But some of the replacements parts created more problems than they solved,...maybe.
I dunno. But what replacement aftermarket parts do you have personal experience with that was, in retrospect, inadvisable?
Maybe we're talking about full length guide rods, reduced power hammer springs, trick magazine followers, match barrels,etc..
What highly touted aftermarkek parts that you have personal experience with caused more problems that it solved?
Thanx,
salty.
Edited....Maybe this belongs in the gunsmithing or general gun forums. Mods, if you feel that this post is more appropiate somewhere else, please feel free to move it. AR and AK owners are welcome to offer their observations also,
thnx's,
sd.

On Glock, except for the sights, I only replace Glock parts with genuine Glock parts, yes some things do break.
1911s, sky is the limit.
there are very good replacement parts in a wide range of pricing.
Personally I like Ed Brown and Smith and Alexander stuff.
Chip McCormick produces some very decent triggers and hammer struts, I have been less than thrilled with some of the other offerings.

Here's a list from my own experience...
FLGR...Not much to say except that they do have a place in badly worn pistols with a LOT of vertical play between the slide and frame. Prevents the slide from rising in recoil and allowing the recoil spring to beat the end of a standard guide rod to Helen Gone. Seems to make cycling a little smoother in
some guns. Mkaes the gun appear better balanced when the slide is locked to the rear. Other than that, not worth the bucks to add on.
8-round magazines...of any flavor. Already been there a hundred or so times.
They don't work as consistently in all pistols as well as the standard sticks...
assuming good springs. Double-Ditto for trick magazines that "Correct the design flaws" in the original design.
Extended slide stop...Usually more trouble than it's worth. The cause of many premature slidelock in many cases. Not necessary for quick slide release. A little quicker for one-hand operation, but a little practice with the standard stop negates the advantage quite a bit, and much less likely to lock the slide with ammo in the mag.
Extended thumb safety...Useful for high-thumb shooting/firing with the thumb on top. A possible liability with concealed carry due to being easier to inadvertently wipe off in the leather. Uncomfortable and slightly slower for me than the standard, USGI-style safety.
Funneled mag well...Useful as long as it's a bevel done to the existing well and not one of those add-ons that add bulk to the butt of the gun and require a slam pad on the mag. Okay for the games and possibly as a sidearm for a SWAT/SET member who is going to carry the gun in a low-slung tactical rig, and likely have it in hand before he actually has a pressing need for it.
Finger groove grips...Use'em if ya like'em. I don't, but it's a matter of individual taste.
High-visibilty sights...Good return for the money if one needs'em due to failing eyesight or personal preference. They do help in fast sight aquisition and a clearer sight picture. Never saw the need for'em, but I don't do a lot of target shooting with any of mine, except off the bench to check for an accuracy problem.
Trick extractors...A waste of money, and when the coil springs wear out, be prepared to wait for several weeks for delivery. A good, standard extractor...correctly tensioned and with just light modification will work perfectly and will very likely outlive the gun...assuming that it doesn't have to climb case rims on a regular basis.
Checkering/Texturizing of the gripping surfaces. Some like it...Some don't.
I don't, but that's a personal issue. Ditto for upswept, ducktail grip safeties. Makes the guns very comfortable to shoot and aids some shooters in a high grip. I prefer the spot-weld that I get from a standard, old-style beavertail.
Comfort and web protection without losing the spot-weld.
Lanyard loop...I like'em. There if ya need it and doesn't get in the way if ya don't. Coke Classic in the little bottles still requires a bottle opener, and the loop is a nifty one. Also good to have if negotiating rough terrain on a dirt bike or ATV to lash the pistol to your belt for added retention security. Imagine traveling 5 or 6 miles out in the sticks and upon arrival at your campsite, discovering that your pistol is missing... I like the loop.
More will come to mind...but the meds have me a little woozy right now.
