It's well worth reading, lots of info . I keep seeing postings on forums that wouldn't be necessary if they had read 'Sixguns'.

Awesome book. Read it for the first time 10 years ago and reread it last year. The second read gave even more info. Keith had an amazing knowledge.

"SIXGUNS", "HELL, I WAS THERE", "SIXGUN CARTRIDGES AND LOADS" and the two "GUN NOTES" books by Elmer Keith are wonderful references and wonderful reading.

The same can be said for "BIG BORE HANDGUNS" and "BIG BORE SIXGUNS" by John Taffin, and also for the two books compiled of articles by Skeeter Skelton.

"PET LOADS" is another favorite of mine.

Charles Askins, Jeff Cooper, and Bill Jordan also wrote very interesting books, although these had less universal appeal than the ones mentioned above, IMHO.

Sixguns by Keith.

My copy has been read so much it's falling apart. I need to get a new copy to read. Plus all the others too.

Its a classic book for anyone especially a shooter. I picked mine up at a book sale many years ago and didnt realize at the time what a treasure I had found. His stories about western ranch life alone are worth the price of the book. I believe you can get a copy through Dillon precisions.

I have a signed copy that is also falling apart. Another very good reference work is The Custom Revolver, by Hamilton Bowen.

You guys convinced me. I just got a copy today at the Harrisburg gun show. In fact it was my only purchase, though there were lots of nice gun prices there for a change.

I love that book, and I would kill for my father's edition. He had actually called Keith up on the telephone shortly before his death to ask for an autographed copy of his book. Keith said he was all out of extra copies at the moment, but he had a book that he had marked up and put a few notations in the margins and said he'd be happy to sell him that one. Of course my father didn't turn it down and it's become one of his most prized books. He's also got an autographed copy of No Second Place Winner by Bill Jordan that has a letter in it from Bill hoping that this book will prove interesting.

Got my copy the same year I bought my very first real revolver (1973). It was just a RG 66 .22 convertable. But the lessons Keith taught me in that , now beat up, book served me WELL.

Always wished I could have met the man. But in those daze he was living in Idaho, and I was a teenager in Montana. Still feel privilaged to know him by proxy....thru SIXGUNS .

I bought a copy many years ago. I reread it regularly. The thing that always intrigues me is that I always learn something new. AND Elmer sure knew what he was talking about. When ever I start off on my own little side thoughts, Elmer has something to say about it and darn if he ain't right. I miss him. Quantrill

Sixguns is timeless. I have Keith's signature on a response to a letter that I sent him.

I certainly concur that if people would read, "Sixguns" (and Geoffrey Boothroyd's, "The Handgun") a great many of the basic questions that turn up on forums wouldn't have to be asked. The books are dated, but not all that many worthwhile handguns have come along since, and they do provide the basic background of firearms development that EVERY gun enthusiast should know.

I did save my letters from Jack O'Connor and a few by others. Both of my copies of, "No Second Place Winner" were autographed by Bill Jordan, and Keith autographed a book for me.
I value my books almost as much as I do my guns.

It really bums me out that so few forum "newbies" seem to not even go by the library to check out firearms basics, or to read the monthly magazines.

The curent gun writers are mostly too commercially-oriented or just egotists who want to be in print. Keith, Askins, O'Connor, Jordan, etc. were a classier bunch.

I was out'n about today, and couldn't find a copy of anything good to read.
Nothing by Kieth, Skelton, Jordan, Ayoob, Marshall, etc.
Nothing.
I guess I gotta buy 'em online, but I really hate to send my money out of state...

It's a fine book, and it's written the way Elmer spoke. I met him on a few occasions, and he would tell a story that sounded like he was reading it from a journal. Many years ago I lucked out and found a copy of his "North American Big Game Hunting", which has a section on bullet placement that features some drawings by Elmer.

I was a young pup back in the late 50s, bought my copie at a S.F. Market St. book store.

Still have it today and frequently refer to its wisdom of sixgunnery.

Bought a copy with my first paycheck at the Book Cache, Anchorage Alaska in 1964. Elmer was like my father--got smarter over the years. I occasionally go back to it to get my bearings; things don't change that much in spite of all the hype in the gun rags. Too much information and too little wisdom out there.

I too, wish that the youngsters would do their homework before they sit down to the keyboard.
