With the case, you got a deal. I've always wanted a 4"-57. Good job.

I paid a bit more for one in nickel minus box and tools.
I think you did well.

Price to my non-collector mind is relative. What is on the market today? Do you think the old pistols are better then a newly made one? I'd say yes by a large margin. An "as new" older S&W to my mind is worth much more then an off the shelf 2005 model. The new ones are priced in the $500~$900 range. I'd say you did very well.
Enjoy it. :)

I'd say you got a pretty good deal.
Around here a M57 in that condition that good seems to be running about $450-550 without the box.

I bought a 4" nickel in 98% condition a month or so ago. Paid about what you did with tax. I think you did just fine on price. I prefer to shoot them with Goodyear grips though. I usually take off the factory grips as they are too large for my hands.

Pretty gun. S prefix or N prefix on the serial number. If it's an S then you did more than get a good deal. If it's N then you got a real good deal. I bought a similar condition S prefix M57 4" a few years ago. Paid about the same and thought that I had done real well.

I'm pretty new to S&W's. Can you tell me the difference between a "s" and a "n" serial #rd gun?

The "S" prefix predated the "N" prefix which started in about 1969-70 I think.

That is a nice M57. If you do not have the addiction yet, you soon will. I bought a 6 inch M57 no dash 3 months ago in Ramsuer and this past Sunday picked up a nickel 4 inch M57 no dash at the Winston-Salem gun show. SSteven1, where do you shoot? I usually go to Calibers. Maybe we could get together and shoot .41's.

After WW II S&W used an S prefix for the N frame serial numbers until 1970 when they reached S333,354 and then started over with N1. I'm not sure why they did this. An S number just means it was made earlier.
Very nice gun. Doesn't matter what you paid for it if you're happy with it.
