I'm fired up guys - I got my .454 casull finally

This won't interest the 'S&W snobs', but I got the Raging Bull I wanted at a pretty good price - the 454SS5. It's the so-called 5 inch model, which is really more like a 4" bbl with the last inch being the expansion area for the porting to work. Still, it's a cool number with a very nice trigger and appears very tight & solid. I looked down the bore before buying while shining a light into the rear of the receiver, and all the cylinder chamber walls seem to line up straight with the barrel - almost bought some .45 schofield to shoot in it since they were out of .45 colt, but it was too pricey for plinkin ammo. What's a good plinker round - any Win WB available in .45 colt?

Which brass do you have on hand for your plinking rounds? 45 Colt or 454? In my Ruger Alaskan (454 with 2.5 inch barrel - no compensator) using 45 Colt brass 6.5 grains of W231 with a Laser Cast 300 gr. bullet is very easy to shoot. In 454 brass my little gun likes 9.5 grains of W231, same bullet, small rifle magnum primer. This load is very accurate in my little thumper and also easy to shoot. I was getting 2 inch groups today when I was paying attention to what I was doing. I don't have a chonograph, but I know these loads will shoot thru a 12-14 inch cedar stump at about 50 yds.
I think the only way to shoot these guns a lot is to load your own. These loads should work in your 454.

GGB - put some whimpy 240 grain Win ammo thru - and you might get this :)

Then - get some Hornady 240 or 300 grainers and ''feel the force'' :D

Congrats on your new gun. Unfortunately .45 Colt and .454 Casull are expensive to buy, even if you buy the cheapest stuff you can find.
I have a .45 Colt and I was unable to find any sort of suitable plinking or target ammo for less than 50 cents a shot. I think the cheapest I found was some Magtech cowboy ammo that was about $18 for 50 (so 36 cents a shot). It wasn't all that accurate and not very satisfying to shoot either.
My buddy has a .454 Casull (the 7.5" Super RedHawk flavor) and both the cheapest .45 Colt and .454 Casull rounds were making him go broke. He recouped his initial reloading setup's costs in the first loading. Considering that many .454 rounds are about $1.25 a shot you can see where you could quickly make that back even if you spent $500 on a press, accessories and componenets (he and I both got started with Lee Anniversary Kits given to us by our respective wives so we spent way less than $500 on everything)
For store bought ammo, I think the best you will find is the 225gr Winchester SilverTips as far as accuracy is concerned. I think I got that for $10 for 20 rounds. I was never happy with any of the cowboy ammo. The target Wincehster 255gr. RNFP was pretty good in my gun, but I didn't think it was worth the 50 cents a shot...I gave up and started reloading and don't plan on looking back.

Miwall (outdoormarksman.com) has 50 rds/45LC for 11.95, slightly cheaper at ammodirect.com.
Miwall also has 50 rds/454 Casull for about $30

P95, THAT is an impressive fireball - holy moses... :what: OK, I'll post a pic when I get home today. Thanks for the link on the cheap .45 colt ammo - $12 for 50 ain't half bad atall, and pretty good if it's accurate. Of course, I plan to get dies/brass/bullets when I get "a round tuit."
