I don't understand legalese all that well, and I'm having trouble finding out whether or not flash suppressors and muzzle brakes are legal on handguns in general, and in Ohio/Washington specifically. Anyone know? TIA,

There is nothing in federal law about either since the AWB expired. Some state or local laws may ban them or define a pistol as an "assault handgun" or something similar based on the presence of a muzzle brake or flash suppressor.

Brakes, usually called compensators on handguns, are normal on USPSA open class guns. Very handy.

Flash hiders? I've only ever seen one. Somebody had mounted a birdcage on a USP tactical. Pretty useless addition, considering how little muzzle flash most loads produce at night anyway.

If someone thought he might be shooting in low light, a flash suppressor might make sense with some powders and loads. Contrary to the myth, the purpose of the flash suppressor is to keep the shooter from being blinded, not to keep the enemy from seeing the flash.
