I have the opportunity to purchase a NIB Colt Z-40 and I think the asking price is a bit high ($800) . Anyone have any input?
Thanks in advance.

If it's the gun I'm thinking of it's a collector's item of sorts, because most of them don't say "Colt" on the side, they say "CZ". You can find the same gun without the Colt name for about half the price.
I've wanted one ever since I picked one up at a gun shop, it felt good in hand and had a nice trigger that could be carried C and L.

Collectors item of a sorts - only 800 made as Colt Z-40. A collaborative effort between Colt and CZ, with a 1911 style frame but CZ top end and internals.
After an intial buying frenzy in Cali at prices of $1500 or so, demand dried up. There was one at West O' The Pecos for $650 for about a year. Get it, as the DAO trigger is sweeeeeet, but collector value is spotty right now. This is what became the short lived CZ40.

I passed up an opportunity to buy one in Vegas several years ago for less than $400. :( Oh well...

I know what you mean -we had 6 at the range I worked at, for $440 each, and I passed, as I couldn't get hicap mags for it.....dagnabit...

I'm a big CZ fan, have several, and several "clones." Had a 40B but traded it away, but may get another one of these days.
I could see paying as much as $500 for Colt Z40, but not more. (Others disagree.) They'll eventually be rare, but I don't know if they'll ever have real collector's value (except as a function of their rarity.) As other have noted, the 40B is basically the same gun.
While most of them were DAO, a few are floating around that can do cocked and locked.

Too high....I believe its a false collectors item. My opinion is that most Colt collectors will not be interested. Anyway, there is one at Hyatts Gun Shop in Charlotte, NIB, for 650. They are on GA if you are interested

Well I agree too high unless you are a COLT Collector in the first degree.
Then its still to much...you can get them for 5-600$...............
Shoot well.

Thanks for all the input. The more research I do the more I don't think I will buy it unless the price comes down quite a bit. Also, a gunshow is coming up, maybe I can find one there for a better price. I'd like to have a 40 S&W and why not a Colt if the price is right. If not, a CZ will do just fine!!
Thanks again.

Its very unlikely you'll ever see a Colt Z-40 at a gun show. Relatively rare. But if you do, it won't be selling for LESS...
The Colt Z40 is a Colt in name only, as the entire gun is pure CZ-75 with a slightly different grip angle. Many of the parts are fully interchangeable with the CZ-75B.
There are several CZ-75-based guns in .40 that are quite nice, and the CZ-40B is every bit as good a gun as the Colt Z-40, but available at 1/2 the price (or less.) You might find one of those at a gun show.
The CZ-40P is generally available for under $350 -- and even though that model sometimes has a "gamey" trigger, it generally smooths out to be a good shooter. It has the 40B slide on a P-01 alloy frame. (The only .40 CZ with an alloy frame, that I can think of.)
