Is paperwork required for a private sale of a firearm? Specifically, an SKS ("large capacity" firearm). A friend and I did a trade a while back, he has been rejected for his FID card renewal and has been instructed to turn in his firearms, my real question is do we need the paperwork to prove the gun is mine? His letter says he can surrender his firearms after turning them in (I don't like the sound of this), but do we need to?

I'm not sure of the timeline of what you describe, but as far as I know (being until recently a lifelong resident of MA) you do need to fill out the state form for a personal transfer of any gun. In addition, the recipient of the normal capacity weapon has to have a class A license, not just an FID card. The FID card and Class B LTC limit you to 10 round capacity guns only.

Sounds like your friend has the SKS and he wants to "turn it in" to you? Then you need a class A LTC and fill out the form which you can get from any gun shop. Hope this helps!

i dont think the sks counts as a large capacity because its 10 rounds yes you do have to get the form and fill it out so it can be regiestered in the other persons name . i have been wondering about the sks becuase i got my mom to get one a while ago she has a class a and want to know if i can possess it on my fid.

must be reported by filing an FA-10, by law. YES, that includes private sales. :scrutiny:

Thanks for the help - that was QUICK. Guess we'll be doing some paperwork to keep legal.

Just for the record, FID was used as a generic term, we both have (or had, in his case) class A's. I thought an SKS was hi capacity, though (according to Mass). I guess that must mean that if the capacity is 11 or more then it is hi-cap :banghead: :banghead:

Anyone got a job opening in upper New England? I really love New England, I just happen to live in the crappiest (bottom) half.
