I was wondering about a pack of bullets that I bought today. Its 250 rounds of Speer 9mm 124 +P Gold Dots I got for 45 dollars. Its in a cardboard box and has practice ammonition on it. The lot no. is B13J77. I was wondering is this any different the 20 or 50 packs that are more expensive, or should I just fill up my mags and forgot about it?

I would imagine that it is the stuff that was "recalled" because of hard primers and such.

Load it up and go and shoot it.

I bought a similar box to that, only in .40 cal 180 gr JHPs, for about $60 bucks. I've shot up about 100 rounds of it so far on the range...

...but I don't use it as carry or defensive ammo.

This is reclassified ammo that did not meet a specific performance criteria. Use it for practice.

It seems Speer sells this stuff off as practice ammo and is not afraid to do so.

Here's the deal: Does Speer put out a lot of bad ammo or do other companies just cover it up? It may seem like Speer is really picky about what goes into their top-shelf ammo. If so, that would say a lot about their self defense Gold Dots for LE.

Just wondering

oh man, I was raped! I just bought 9mm luger +p 124gr. h.p. it also says not to be repackaged practice ammunition. The kicker is I paid about $135.00 for a box of 250. :cuss: Some one fill me in on some cheap ammo I can take to the range a shoot. Also what is the best for stoping power. I have a sw99 thanks everyone.

Raped, ravaged and robbed! Man, that isn't even a particularly good price if they were in 20 round boxes of non-practice ammo.

Don't know if you should give a heads-up to Speer about the dealer that sold it or just chalk it up to experience.

SW99, Georgia Arms sells new 124gr +P 9mm GoldDots for $25/100 or $235/1000.

They have alotta good deals on a wide variety of ammo.

The ammunition isn't recalled. It was made under contract, but the contract was cancelled before delivery was made.

Several lots were involved, though I don't have the lot numbers, covering 9mm and .40 S&W. I bought a few of the 9mm 250 round boxes for $33.95 each.

blades67, are you sure this isn't the reclassified 'use for practice only' stuff? Why would it say 'use for practice only' if it was just over run or from a canceled order?

Either way, it works just fine in every gun I've tried it in. And it's darn near as cheap as S&B.

It may work as good as S&B, but boy is it DIRTY. I will probably buy it again, but I swear the 150 rounds I put through my CZ made it look like I put 1150 rounds.

sw99, who did you buy it from? Any chance of getting your money back? If you used visa or MC, you have some good leverage if the ad misstated the ammo's condition.

For practice ammo, I find it very hard to beat the Winchester 100 round packs at Wal-Mart.

My choice for SD ammo is Gold Dot 124 +P loaded by Georgia Arms. Gold Dots have outperformed everything else I've tested. Caveat - have not tested any Winchester JHPs.

I picked up several 50rd boxes of Speer Gold Dot +P from Sportsman's Guide for about $12 per box last year.
It is super accurate in my P95.

My boxes aren't labelled "for practice only", and I called Speer to make sure they weren't part of the recall.
My bedside gun is packed with 'em.

Ammoman (Eric) told me when I called that the 9mm 124+P GDHP they are selling in 500 round lots are considered 98-99 percent and sold for practice use only. That means 1 or 2 out of 100 may not fire. Personally, I don't want that ONE potentially bad round in my firearm for SD; Mr. Murphy's law mandates that particular round will be in my firearm when I need it most.

If your life depends on something, it's worth a few extra $$'s for quality, IMHO. :scrutiny:

It is my understanding that Erics ammo suffers from hard primers. For practice ammo, this is really a non-issue. I think we're losing perspective on the cost here. ammoman.com charges $90 shipped for 500 rounds of 124 +P loaded ammo with nickle cases. 500 124 Gr Gold Dot bullets cost approx $50 and the 500 pieces of Remington +P brass (not nickle plated) runs nearly $50 as well, so basically your getting powder, hard primers, the labor of loading and shipping for negative $10 ! The best price I ever recall getting on S&B ammo is about $5.75/50 plus shipping. This Gold Dot ammo is effectively about $7.80/50 before shipping.

In my opinion, and it is ever so humble, this is the best deal on loaded ammo in some time. I wouldn't keep it in a defensive gun for sure but even if you just buy some to practice with a little and keep some to make sure that a given gun will reliably feed and eject Gold Dots, it's well worth it.

Ok so when I'm not practice shooting I'm going to designate one clip for home defense ammo. What is the best ammo for home defense for my sw99 9mm. Thanks!

Well, I sure as heck wouldn't want to take my chanches against the 124 Gr +P+ Winchester Rangers. The 115 +P and 124 +P Gold Dots are good stoppers and last I checked, the CorBon 115+ were right on top of the one shot stop ratings.

In general the 124s seem to be the best compromise between the high velocity 115s and the slower but reliably penetrating 147s. The 147s typically need at least 4" to get to their rated velocities. Personally, I'd consider the 147s best for 4.5" or longer barrels.

Edit: Let me rephrase that last sentence - I would not consider the use of 147s ideal in barrels under 4.5" long. I still believe the 124s are the ideal 9mm round in all barrel lengths. In southern California, Florida or the southwest where heavier coats are not often encountered, I would consider the 115s but I think either 124 +P Gold Dots are very desirable and 124 +P+ Rangers are the best choice.

I picked up a box of 250 to test fire in my Hi-Power and P99, checking for cycling & POI. So far, it's great stuff.
I now plan to go get some "fresh" stuff to load up for SD.
