Wanting a gun that is considerably smaller, lighter than my CZ 97b, I would like to buy a SA XD sub-compact in 40 S&W.
I would appreciate advice/input as regards selecting between the 9802 Black, the 9812 OD, and the 9802F.
Frankly, the 9802 F is not much of a contender because money is a major consideration in this purchase, but I'd pay it if I was convinced it was worth it. The main choice, however is between the black and the OD.

Well, I'm at work so I'll just quickly recap what I've said before:

I've had the 40 Tactical and 40 Subcompact for a little over a year now - love em both:

1. Concealability - I'm sure very few ppl plan on concealing the tactical, but it could probably be done - the grip size is the same as the service, and the longer barrel conceals just as well as the 4". However, the 3" is definitely the way to go. I have a desantis nemesis holster that's not very stable, and a tucker answer holster. At an athletic 5'10", I don't have trouble concealing, my problem is just finding a comfortable spot to put it where I don't have to adjust between sitting/standing.

2. Shootability - I've put in a few thousand rounds through each - both guns shoot pretty well, recoil is strong, but not sharp. I do plan on getting trigger jobs done on both (competition for the 5", carry for the 3") since the pull is a little heavy and travel a little long. I've found that I can shoot the 3" just as well as the 5" anywhere under 15y, after that, the longer sight radius on the 5" definitely helps.

3. Reliability - They've been reliable guns, the only problems I've had are FTFeeds with some PMC hollowpoint.

4. Value - They are a great value - You can expect to pay about $100 less than a comparable glock, and with better or equal features (IMO). Of course, ppl have been having rust problems, as the finish isn't as good as glock's - but I personally have had no problems with rust on either of my XDs in this tropical Ohio weather. I understand that if you have significant rust problems, you can send them to Springfield and they will refinish them free of charge. Maybe I should induce rusting

5. Overall - As far as plastic guns go, I love it. Good value, good ergonomics, great feel. It's even got great style, for a plastic gun.

While looking thru GunsAmerica I have to say I was surprized at how close to MSRP these guns sell for!

The XD is a nice gun. I got a XD-9 in SS with a 4" bbl. It works for me but I have not held the sub compact so I don't know how it feels. The SS is well worth the little extra money since the blued finish is garbage.

I can only tell you I'm pleased with my black XD sub compact. So far the finish has held up well. It gets wiped down regularly after carrying and cleaned after each use.

Not to hijack, but listen to what happened to me today....

I was shooting my XD9 Service today and had a wild malfunction. The gun has about 200 rounds through it, and was properly lubricated and clean.

Anyway, using one of the factory 15 rounders that came with it and new production Winchester 124 gr NATO ammo, I had a piece of brass fail to eject, sticking itself into the magazine, where it then pushed the next live round nose first down the mag body. Nice.

No immediate action to cure this one!! I had to unload, dig the "debis" out of the mag, repostion the rounds and reload.

Probably mag related, eventhough it was a new factory mag, but my XD confidence is somewhat diminished now. I'm going to keep shooting it to see if it happens again.

I myself have a Springfield Armory Xtreme Duty 40 Sub-Compact.

I like it.... I like it a lot

At about round 80 I had a round fail to completley load into the chamber, I felt very, very upset and betrayed  :(

I am now at round 600, with only that 1 failure.

Im going to the range tomorrow and put anothe 200 rounds through her.

However THR member alduro has reported problems with his XD40SC. Failures to eject at least 1/100 rounds, and is getting slap back from his trigger. :what: He has sent his gun back to Springfield for repairs
