Do 30-30 bullets require gas-checks?

Just curious, looking at Lee every mold has a gas check, but other companies don't.

I rather like the idea of doing without, anyone here know one way or the other?

No.
If you keep the velocity down, you don't have to have a gas check. I get fair shooting from Laser Cast bulk plain base bullets loaded very lightly in a .30-06. And of course my .38-55s at 1200 fps over black don't get a gas check. But a gas check adds a lot of flexibility. Sometimes a bullet with cut for gas check will shoot ok without the check, sometimes it won't.
RCBS makes a "Cowboy" plain base .30 mold.

I haven't used them, accuracy ay 150 yds is very good, I never kill anything beyond that range anyway, usually much closer.

As the original Saeco company distributor I still have .30 caliber 4 cavity custom precision molds in my collection that I am selling and I have 120 grain varmint and plinker bullet designs that are either bevel base or Gas Check depending on the velocity desired.

The bevel base bullets are for varmints in the yard or rural property and the gas check bullets are for higher velocities for larger or further away animals. So it depends on your needs as I have sold both styles and they work for any .30 caliber weapon.
