Tokarev, pickle, fish, vodka. Lethal combination.

Looks like a good combo to me! I've always liked Tokarevs and vodka to a certain extent. The limited amount of Russian food I've tried has been ok too.

What a perfect metaphorical representation of Russia:
1) simple
2) practical
3) austere
4) militaristic
5) bookish
6) stark
7) bleak
Btw, the inscription on top reads "Soviet Radio-Wagon"

In Russia, you don't shoot gun, gun shoots you!
Yakov Smirnoff tribute, since we're being looney.

Good picture, Max. I know Mr. Burgasov was a member on TFL at one time.
Do you know what the small round object below the plate is? It could be significant to the meaning of the photo.

It's a glass of vodka...

C'mon why assume it is vodka? It could be water, right?
Right?
Anyone?

That disk looks alot like a commendation for something or other.

Here2Learn, water? Ever been to Russia? Clear isn't the right color for water. :uhoh:

Here2learn - I was thinking it looked like a commendation or medal of some type also. It also looks like it could be a Napoleonic decoration of some type.
Or - it could be a poker chip. ;) Afterall everything in that photo is a gamble of one sort or another. :)

It is some sort of pin. maybe a "distinguished shooter" or "DOSAAF member", can't see.

haha... it could be Gin too. That is a definite possibility. I think there were around 4 or 5 bottles of gin sold in Russia over the past year. Could be some of that batch.

Well, I am wondering if someone knows what is on the plate next to pickles?
Very russian/ukrainian component...

Looks like fish to me. Pickled herring maybe?

It may also be pig fat - bacon without muscle tissue.

nope :)

The white slices on the plate are indeed pig fat - or, as it known in Russia and Ukraine, "Salo" or "Schpick". Well salted, sometimes with black pepper, and frozen until hard, it is one of the most preferred vodka companions over here ;)

It is absolutely delicious too. It tastes great with salt and freshly-baked bread, as well as in heavy winter dishes, such as thick beans soups. When the snow is above your knee, you need the energy...

CAnnoneer - I am sorry - did not see your post on page 2. You're right.
Max - very good description. I just ordered 2 bottles of 'Russian Standart" because of your post :p
in 2002 I liked it very much, is it still good?

Omega, im not that big into vodka, i'm more of a beer OR brandy man myself ;)
However, 'Russian Standard' is still pretty good, and i usually buy a .5 bottle if i expect some valuable guests (such as my dad ;))
