HPs in a Beretta 92?

Ive heard that it isnt a good idea to shoot hollow point bullets in an alloy framed gun, because it may gouge the feedramp. Is this true, and would this apply to shooting 124 gr Gold Dots through my Beretta 92? Thanx-

This doesn't really apply to the Beretta. On 1911s, the frame feed ramp is actively engaged in the feeding of rounds from the mag. So when an alloy frame was created, the feed ramp area originally designed to be steel was a bit soft for sharp edged ammo.
On the 92, which was alloy from day one, the tiny portion of the feed ramp built into the frame doesn't really play a role in chambering the rounds. If you insert a loaded mag in the frame with the slide off you'll see that the rounds feed almost directly into the chamber (which is one reason why the Beretta is so reliable).
This weapon sees an absolutely huge useage by police, who all use HPs. If this was a problem, you'd know it. No problem.
Most other alloy frame guns have no feed ramp surface in the frame at all, avoiding the issue completely.

What Handy said.
In my experience, there's just about no bullet profile that'll choke a 92; have at it.

I haven't found a round yet that either of my 92's won't eat!

Yep... about 2,000 rounds through a Beretta and over 15,000 through my Taurus PT99 with no failures whatsoever. Mostly 115 Gr S&B or Winchester FMJ but plenty of 115 +P CorBons and 115 Gr Gold Dots. A sampling of most ammo available in most bullet weights.
They may be ugly, they may be clunky and maybe they like slapping SEALs around with uber-SAAMI spec loads, but they sure do feed ammo. :p

Cratz,
Have you had to replace the locking block in the Taurus yet? No flame, just curious.

Nothing ever 'broke' but I did install Wolff recoil spring, trigger spring and firing pin spring a long time ago (something else to, but I can't recall right now), probably around the 6,000 round mark. More recenly I installed the top end kit and locking block kit from and new magazine springs but these were done after most of the rounds were fired. I'm told the locking block is a weak point with the Beretta design but I have a friend that stood beisde me for probably 10,000 of my rounds shooting his Border Patrol just as much as I shot mine and has never replaced anything.

I know two gunsmiths who swear on a stack of bibles that the Taurus locking blocks are less crack-prone than the Beretta originals. They'll usually replace a cracked Beretta block with a Taurus part, and have shown me guns where the replacement has long outlasted the original.

Yeah Tamara, I had heard that before. Of course, Beretta changed their block design, too. A test I had read broke the new Beretta block at just over 19,000 rounds of mixed +P and standard rounds. Just curious, thanks Cratz and Tamara.

According to the SEALs at tacticalforums.com, there was a manufacturing problem which Beretta refused to own up to, and that caused the falling out between the two. The uber-SAAMI thing is apparently a myth.

I knew a guy who was with an Army Special Forces group that was struck with a Beretta slide as well. It wasn't just the Seals.
The funny part is, if it was so obviously caused by super hot ammo, why would the Seals KEEP DOING IT?

There's a joke about getting smacked in the head with flying Beretta slides in there, someplace... ;) :D
