A friend of mine wants to sell a Smith & Wesson Model 27-2 (357 Magnum - N frame). It is in excellent condition with the box. It is the pinned & recessed model. Does anyone know what it is worth $$$ ?

The 27-2 was made from 1962 until 1981. The guns with the "diamond" stocks (pre-1968) will bring a slight premium. The 3.5" barrel is the most popular and will bring a premium. The 5" is next popular. The 6 is most common and the 8" sells for about the same as the 6" barrel. The 4" barrel becomes a standard length in 1979.
What kind of box, cardboard or wooden case? The wooden presentation case adds a premium. Are the papers and tools there? Does it have its original stocks?
From my observation, a ballpark guess for a 6" 27-2 in 95% original finish, in a cardboard box, would be around $350-$375. The same gun with the 3.5" barrel would be $500-$550. A 5" model would be around $450-$500. The late 4" guns usually go for around $400-$450. Add $50 for the wooden case, start deducting for wear beyond the 95% condition. Add for better condition.
If you live in California add 25-50% to all prices due to the laws prohibiting importation of most used guns.
See why it's not as easy as "what's it worth?"

Coupla years back I found mine - in fact to replace the same model I ''lost" (had ''stolen'' by Gov) in UK in '97. It was the 5", which I personally feel is the epitome of N Frame perfection re its proportions. It dated IIRC to late '76- early '77.
It was in wooden box with cleaning brush etc - and I paid $400 which seemed a tad high then but - I wanted it bad. On refelction since I am not worried to pay that much as I feel the value holds and yeah - you may even find those go up to $450 or so.
If you see a good one - go for it - I doubt you will lose in the end and the joy of ownership and shooting will decrease the dent on your pocket! :)

A fellow put two LNIB 3 1/2 inch 27's up on the S&W forum within the last 45 days or so and got $750 for each of them in less than an hour.
A LNIB with the box and papers absolutely commands a premium right now. An unfired one can go higher.
Even a nice example without box and papers will go for over $500. In the past 18 months the 3 1/2's have become popular.
You can always shop and find a deal. I always try to shop patiently with cash in hand when I want something.
But they are not commonly found, in excellent or LNIB condition, for under $500 anymore.
