What do I have here?

I'm reposting this from the revolver forum as someone over there suggested I might get better results here in the bp area.

My grandfather passed away a couple years ago and I've been slowly going over my inheritance from him. I found this revolver in the back of his gun safe and I'd appreciate any help in positivly identifying it. It's obviously some sort of Colt open-top cartridge revolver. It's marked "36 CAL" and has patent dates of July 25, 1871 and July 2, 1872. The cylinder is engraved with images of a stagecoach robbery. The frame, barrel, and grip frame bear the serial number 45078. The nickel plating looks to be in about 80% condition.

First of all, note: I am not an expert. If you want to actually shoot it, have it inspected by a competent gunsmith first. They'll likely be able to tell you a bit more about the gun, as well.

That being said, it looks like a cartridge conversion of a Colt model 1862(?) Navy cap and ball revolver with a shortened barrel. Not to be confused with the 1851 Navy, which had an octagon barrel and different loading lever.

Thanks for the reply!

I found this Colt round barrel cartridge model w/ ejector (http://www.civilwarpreservations.com/catdet.asp?TargetItem=SF365&CategoryType=handguns) that looks almost identical to my gun with the exception of the barrel profile. I don't know if the barrel profile is something that Colt would have changed from one year to the next?

I don't think I have a cartridge conversion due to the fact that there is no hole below the barrel for a ram and the patents from 1871 & 1872 postdate the 1862 model.

HEY HEY HEY!
Colts first cartridge pistol was not the Peacemaker but that which you have!
Can you say small but not insignificant fortune?
Find a QUALIFIED antiques dealer and have it appraised,Yes I realize its Grands and not for sale, but you will need to insure for true value!
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
I would wish you good luck but you do seem to have plenty ;sorry for your loss.
