I spent a little time playing with a flintlock borrowed from a friend.

I'm shopping around for flintlock, and jumped at the chance to actually shoot one before I actually bought one.

It's a Pedersoli reproduction of a Queen Anne in .50 caliber. The charge was 35 grains of Elephant FFg.

Boom.

How's the kick in that little smoke-twig?

I'm pretty much at "full recoil" in the photo.

Not a lot at all.

I have one and use 40 or 45 grains of FFFG. And I fire it one-handed. There's no point in shooting it if I don't go for the big flash and bang. But mine has a terribly hard trigger pull, some people ask me if it is broken. I really need to take it apart and polish or lube a bit.

But it sure is fun. Right up until the flint falls out in the middle of a rock quarry. Ask me how I know! And how the flint is then invisible in the rock fragments.
