These things are one of the neetest rifles I've seen in a while.

22" barrel and it comes with Williams Fire Sights. All for under $200!

I couldn't pass it up. I hope to have it by the end of the week and be able to try it out at Hap Baker Rifle range next Sunday.

Any Marylanders interested in joining me?

I'm from Ohio but go to Edgewood about once a year. Can I PM you then for a range trip? :D

2 guys at Graybeard have one. Sounds like a hoot - and you are justified in yelling "Get Some!" while firing it. And it won't peg you in the face with brass either. :) Where'd you find one under $200? At the last 2 gunshows here, the dealers who had them in .500 were *really* skimming the top for suckers - looking to rake 'em over the coals at $289 or so.

Heck yeah I'd be interested! :) I was looking at one for $249 at a Glen Burnie shop. The only thing that's put me off on it so far is the cost of ammo. I love the sights though, nice and bright.

you're not planning on taping any ceramic plates to your back are you?

sorry, couldn't help it. seriously, it sounds like loads of fun. i hear cor-bon makes a .500 s&w "special" load.

Where can I get a handy Marlin lever in 500 sw?

dunno about .500, but i saw a 16" barrel, stainless marlin in .454 casull at sportsman's warehouse a while back. all i could do was giggle, my friend asked the clerk why - her answer? "why not?"

I'll let you know when/if the rifle comes in this week, and we can meet up @ Hap Baker Sunday.

Heck even if the rifle doesn't come in this week, I want a little moer trigger time with my PTR-91, I still need to figure out why the brass is attacking me!

Any other Marylanders interested ?

It's still a single shot rifle, 500 S&W or not. I'll wait for a Marlin or Winchester and ammo prices are prohibitive for significant shooting time.

Yea it's a single shot, but what the hell, it's only $200, the ammo isn't cheap by any means, but I'm not buying it for extended range sessions, I'm getting it to shoot water mellons, TV sets and pretty much any thing else that will blow up! So I'm not looking for a 'plinker'

I will be useing it for hunting, but only after I get use to it, and I put a shotgun scope on it. I'm betting the Mag tech 275gr Copper hollow points will do one heck of a number on a White Tail!

What are the ballistics of the 500 S&W?

Does it have any advantage over a .45-70?

Same question as SteveW13. How does 500 S&W compare to 45-70?

Look here:

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=419101#419101

FWIW, I decided last evening that I MUST have one myself, and soon. Here's the glass I plan to put on it - one of these 2:

http://www.riflescopes.com/products/200087/burris_1.75-5x20_fullfield_ii_rifle_scope.htm
http://www.riflescopes.com/products/6590/nikon_1.5-4.5x20_monarch_ucc_shotgun_scope.htm

IINM, however, the ballistics are significantly inferior to a hot .45-70, especially trajectory-wise. But as a short-range proposition for blowing stuff up, like JeepDriver said, it'd be hard to beat.

I'm holding out for the .460 XVR. I know they will make a barrel for it sometime soon. Those Hornady's with the SST bullets are just mean looking.

Yeah. Or, do what quickdtoo at Graybeard's did. Take a .45-70 Handi, and ream it to .45-120. :what: That's a .458, not a .451 gun however.

The damn things are backordered! :fire:

I called around to 3 of our wholesalers and none of them had any of these guns! I never thought a single shot rifle would be so hard to find. I guess I won't be shooting it this weekend :(

For the two gentlemen who were asking about the specs on the 500 - The 500 will push a 350 gr. bullet to 1850+ out of the pistol, so the rifle will probably be a tiny bit quicker. The powder is fast burning so a longer barrel wont give you much if anything. If I remember correctly the 440 gr. hard cast loads were running 1500 fps. or in that area depending upon your load. It's manageable out of a pistol, so I don't think it'll be any problem in a rifle.

As for comparing it and the 45/70, they're pretty darn close. It depends alot on bullets, etc. but as far as sheer horsepower goes they're close. I do know some folks though who have loaded the 45/70 up in stout rilfes to levels that the 500 S&W just can't match.

BTW, for those of you getting or thinking about getting the 500 (in anything), handloading is the key. You can handload for it pretty cheap. Relatively speaking anyway. I haven't bought a box of factory ammo for mine yet, and if I can help it, I never will. :) Not only will you save gobs of money by handloading, you can load it down if you want, and there are more bullet choices.

I've been thinking about getting one to go with my revolver. What is the accuracy potential of the rifle? I'd be happy with 3moa or so...The revolver may be capable of that though, but not in my hands.

Strongbad, that sure looks like the Garland (TX) Public Range in the photo you posted.

I bet that the H&R is Big Pig medicine.

Sylvilagus you're close. It's the sister range to the one in Garland, located in Cedar Park just outside of Austin. (owned by the same guy)

I think it'll be a serious hog gun, but I haven't had a chance to use it on one yet. I loaned it to a buddy this weekend to hunt hogs, but he got sick and didn't go. We're headed to Pearsoll (spelling) with it this weekend to see if we can do some damage with it. So far all it's killed is turtles, and let me tell you, it's a turtle killin' sonnofagun! Blows'em clear out of the water. (not a joke) :) LOL

Turtle hunting with a S&W 500 rifle is;

1- DAMN FUNNY :o
2- Sick :scrutiny:
3- not a real sport
4- a new diet plan (can't find any meat to eat) :what:
5- the icon says it all...:banghead:
6- your what gives us legitimate turtle hunters a worse name! :neener:

But the thought sure did make me laugh!!

Talk to me about the comparison of the S&W 500 to the 45-70. That sounds intresting. Or maybe the S&W 500 to the 450 marlin. After all you can do the hand gun and rifle combo on all 3.

Hehe, something about seeing legitimate and "turtle hunter" in the same sentence made me laugh.
