KANSAS CITY - Prosecutors are calling it fortunate that no one was injured this week when more than 150 rounds were fired in a drive-by shooting that apparently stemmed from a dispute over a bicycle part.

Timothy Nolan, 33, and his stepson, Jesse Shearer, 24, were charged Thursday with a total of 29 felony charges including armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and assault in Wednesday's shooting spree.

"It is very fortunate that no one was killed or injured in this tragic escalation of violence," said Jackson County Prosecutor Mike Sanders.

According to the probable cause statement, a 12-year-old boy was riding his bike Wednesday when Nolan approached him, accused him of stealing a bicycle part and punched him in the face. After the child went home and told his father what had happened, the pair went to Nolan's home, records show. As they stood on the sidewalk in front of the home, Nolan pointed a rifle at the father, and the pair left, the statement said.

Around 11 p.m. Wednesday, the father was sitting on his front porch when he saw rounds being fired into the air from a gray car, police said. More rounds were fired into the air when the vehicle returned a short time later.

The father then saw a burgundy car drive down the street with an occupant firing rounds into his home. That vehicle returned several times, with additional rounds fired into the house during each pass. Eight people were at the house when the bullets were fired, police said.

As officers searched the neighborhood, they saw Nolan and Shearer getting out of the burgundy car. Inside the vehicle were two rifles and numerous live rounds and spent casings, the probable cause statement said.

After he was taken into custody, Shearer told police that he was the driver and Nolan was the shooter. Shearer said he didn't fire the rifles but he did help Nolan fix a rifle that malfunctioned between passes at the house, police said.

Fortunately, it wasn't the blind squirrel's lucky day.

A 33 year-old man punched a 12 year-old in the face?

Shearer said he didn't fire the rifles but he did help Nolan fix a rifle that malfunctioned between passes at the house, police said.

That's a little more confidence than I'm happy with. I'm more used to idiots making one pass and then getting the hell out of Dodge before the counter-fire starts.

Given that Dear Old (Step)Dad is a grand total of 9 years older than his baby boy, I'm going to guess that there's going to be a negative tattoo-to-tooth ratio involved somewhere.
