I have the itch for a new something something.

I have a Walther p22. I have a Steyr m9. I have a CZ85. I would like to add a little more oomph to my array. I am stuck ... the only things I am certain of are as follows.

I am a lefty.
No Glocks. ( dont like undocumented features known as KB)
No S&W. (No reason, just dont like)
No Springfields or other 1911 (been there done that, not ruling out, just looking for different)
No Taurus or Berettas.
I want .357 mag, .40 or .45 (I want a cheap readily available caliber)
I dont really want to be a one manufacturer owner.

Here is my interest list.
Steyr m40
CZ 75 SA in .40
Ruger P90th SE
Ruger GP100 4" .357
HK USP
Sig 220
SIG Pro
Walther P99 .40
Crazy consideration category:
Rock Island Armory 1911 .45


I am leaning towards polymer semi-auto. Has anyone fired the P90th? How heavy is it?

Any comments and flames welcomed.

From your list of options, I whole heartedly recommend the HK USP 45. It was the 1st USP I bought. I've currently got 4 in various sizes and calibers & I'm very satisfied w/ them all!

Personally I would go GP100. Everybody needs a .357 revolver.

I also like the SIG 220 alot, like a whole lot. The Ruger P97 is a polymer framed .45 that is nice.

Still based on what you already own, I would go with a .357 revolver. Lots of fun, plenty of power and makes for a nice change of pace from your semi-autos at the range.

perhaps you should try the USP, you can make it a 'lefty' gun since you can switch the safety/decocker to the right of the right instead of normal left. it is a .45 and polymer. it's quite big.

Id say a 9mm is CHEAP.....40's are anything but cheap....hell, 357 Sig rounds cost less around here sometimes...LOL
Id look at the CZ40SA, USP40C and Sig 220....
357 Wheel=Ruger SP/GP, you cant go wrong.
I also played with a commander size RIA 45 today.....Wonderfully crisp trigger...better than the Kimber it was next to.....no kidding...would make a hell of a project gun......ye haa.....
Good luck....Id play with the CZ40SA idea......My SA 9mm will have a 3# trigger next week....at least thats the goal...

Take a look at the Springfield XD polymer semi-auto. Of your three listed caliber preferences, 40S&W is the only one currently available (also available in 9mm and 357sig). The XD40 is my daily carry weapon; also have two XDs in 9mm.

I'm a lefty, and therefore appreciate the ambidextrous features. I take a lot of folks shooting with me, and of all my guns, the XDs seem to be preferred for fit and shootability.

How did a Rock Island Armory 1911 make the list, but Springfield Armory and all other 1911's get excluded because you been there & done that?
You don't mention need, so I assume all neccessary niches have been filled.
I like the Sig 220 and the H&K USP from that list, although I'd tend toward a .45 ACP USP Compact.

One quick question... Have you considered a Hi Power? Since you are a lefty, it might be worth looking at. Because a wrist injury several years ago, I shoot with either hand. Several months in a cast on my right hand did not in the least detract me from wanting to practice, so I learned and now go both ways, albeit better with my strong side. Anyway, other than a K-22 the Hi Power is the most comfortable handgun I own to shoot left handed. I have no idea why, it just happens to be the one that feels equally as good from either side. All,

I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I am everyones worse nightmare when it comes to handgun ownerships. I trade and trade and trade.

I have owned .357s before, leaning towards another. I dont like alot of 1911 due to cost being in my mind excessive (I am cheap) for what they bring in the way of innovations and usage. I dont like Glocks because of the grip angle. High powers are nice, but prefer CZ design to HP and Berettas in steel framed pistols.

So far, nobody has mentioned the Walther. Most comments are for the GP, the USP and the SIG 220. One comment for the P97.

I am looking for more input ... I am taking into account mag cost, repair ease, durability and since I am a little bit of a girly man... ease on recoil from these high powered cartidges.

Back to the topic at hand. Walther P99s are great also. All the guns you listed are top notch with the possible exception of the Rock Island....I have heard good and bad and have no personal experience.

I just figured the P99 was more of the same for you. I like variety so I still stand by the GP100 idea, since you don't have a .357 revolver.

If you really are leaning towards a bigger bore semi-auto, I am with Ala Dan 100% SIG 220, there simply is no substitute. Problem is it is like smoking a good hand rolled Havana Cigar once you have had one almost everything else is just a nother cigar. Once you have a 220 almost every other firearm is just another gun. :D

Ok maybe they aren't quite Excaliber but to me they very very high up on the Semi-Auto handgun food chain. You will not be dissapointed and may very well be ruined for other .45s.

Assuming that it fits your hand(s), I second considering the H&K USPc: you pick the caliber.

I managed to get my .40, not to mention brass, Dillon conversion kit, bullet mold, etc. just before they released the .45ACp, for which, of course, I had all of the accessories.

Other than that, and the lack of a 10mm, it's great, and, if I had an indoor range or global warming worked, and so NH had no snow, I'd carry, and fire it year round.

Go with S&W 686 seven shot. The extra two inches of sight radius is what it's all about.

.357 mag is truely fruit of the gods.

Of all of your choices you should do ok with anything you pick. By all means, if you like fat ugly guns by a ruger(insert any model here).

...may I heartily suggest the SIG P220?

The decocking lever can be easily activiated with the side of your trigger finger.

Actually, any SIG would serve you well.

However, I also own the sig pro....and one thing I've noticed is that the mag release which I like to keep 'righty' as I can easily activate with the trigger finger again, rubs against my middle finger when shooting those stout 357SIG rounds. I could flip it over to the other side ofthe grip, but then I'd have to get used to releasing with my thumb. I'd seriously consider this little sleeper pistol, as it functions well, and shoots amazingly straight. The trigger is better than most of my classic P-2xx series pistols.


Also, the HK USP is a must-have for any serious polymer fanatics. My USPs have the ambidextrous safeties installed. The mag release is also ambi, and is probably the fastest of all pistols, IMHO.

The SIG 220 is the best DA .45 so get that if you want a DA .45.

If you want a .357, Ruger makes great revolvers. I have a Speed Six that I love but also try Security Six and Service Six. They can be had for a good price and they are rugged and reliable and accurate. If you want a super duper accurate .357, S&W seems to have a slight edge. I would take a S&W 686/586 over a Ruger GP100 any day.

I had budgeted about 500 for this purchase. The SIG and HK were just going to be to much, even used. The SIG Pro would have worked... but it just felt top heavy to me.

I stopped at my local shop and was perusing all my picks. I had dropped the revolvers because I can always find a revolver. I had pretty much pointed out all semis I liked in .40 and polymer.

I thought about another Steyr M... but wanted something with more acceptance and accesories.

I like the CZ 100, but the trigger is long ... John Homes long.

The walther p99 is nice, but I have the p22. Why buy into the Germans at that level.

It came down to a CZ75 in .40 (steel, but I love CZs) and then out of nowhere came an OD .40 Springfield XD.

I shoot two clips out of a rental, I liked it. Stout recoil but quick second recovery shots. Lefty friendly. It has numerous accessories and quite a following. To be honest I bought it at $450 to punish myself for not buying it original iteration 3 yrs ago, the HS2000 for $259. Also, I wanted to BUY AMERICAN. No more french guns (ohh thats right there are none), The German guns are skating on thin ice, no more Russian since it looks like there arms manufacturers sold weapons to Iraq so they could be used against us and I would have bought Coalition (CZ or S&W) but, I didnt. Good old red, white and blue. This guns better not suck.

I will therefore call this gun "The Dumb Tax Gun".

I hope I keep on liking it.

Of those you listed - Ruger GP100. Accurate, reliable, greatest variety & availability of ammo of any handgun and you'll never wear it out. Probably the most useful of the bunch as a practical matter.

I didn't see a revolver in your current line up - so you REALLY NEED one. But, if you must get another Auto, go with the Ruger P-90. Again; accurate, reliable and tough.

The looks may not win you over with a Ruger, but the value and performance will.
