NICS put my gun buy on hold today

I stopped by my favorite gun store today and found a used .22 rifle that I liked, it's a Browning T-bolt with a peep sight. I thought this would be a nice rifle for my son to teach the grandkids to shoot when they are old enough to learn shooting. I did the paperwork and the store owner called in for the NICS check and I was put on hold. This is strange as I've purchased several rifles and handguns from this store.

Fear not.

A hold is also given when their system is down or they are backed up. It does not necessarily mean they found something in your background check they need to look further in.

I know that the SSN is optional but I didn't get many delays when I called in a NICS check as it helps when people have a very common name. also not buying a gun on a weekend makes a difference

I bought an Arisaka T99 at 1PM EDT with no issues. Even tho my name is not common, I specify my SSN and I've never had a problem, and I've bought a LOT over the past year or so.

I have never been able to figure out exactly why but I get a hold EVERY SINGLE TIME! It must be because I am Canadian.

It is so frustrating when you find an exciting new gun in the store and then can't take it home!

Might be someone with the same name. You use your SSN?

Now you know how your buddies back home feel.

One of the last times I bought a gun over the internet--a Benelli M1S90--I went to the "kitchen table" dealer to pick it up. He called in for the NICS check, and was told that it would be delayed.

Well, this dealer laid into the person on the other end of the phone. He said, look, this guy just bought a gun through me a couple of months ago, you think he's a criminal now? And I'm not going to have him drive all the way back here in three days. You OK him now.

He was swearing up a storm. But he got the person to approve the sale.

How common is that?

I've never seen anything about NICS in the Second Amendment. Did I miss something?

The NICS sysytem went down yesterday at @ 4:00 PM CDST. We had a customer in who accidently gave the wrong last four on his SSN, was delayed, then when we called back, the system was down, so he couldn't take home his gun.

I've had the same experience as Nick. In three different cases, at three different times and locations I have been delayed, and then the check comes back in a day or so approved. :cuss: My name is not unusual (Thomas Dunn) and I DO add my SSN, to no avail. :banghead:
It's a moot point for me now, however, because my pistol permit supercedes the NICS check.

in Mass. even with the carry permit, all sales go thru NICS.

I've purchased quite a few guns since the NICS was started and have never had a delay until today. I have a VERY unusual middle name and I did include my SSN. The gun store owner asked if I wanted him to call me if the OK came thru today and I told him that I would just come back to his store next Thursday and pick up the rifle. My grandkids aren't old enough to shoot yet anyway.

Thank goodness I live in Georgia, where gun sales are cash-and-carry with a permit.

I had to go through NICS once, and was delayed two days. Only thing I can think of is I've still got Danish citizenship from the old days.

Oh, and I looked up the 2nd Amendment on that internet thing, and there's no mention of NICS in it. Go figure.

Sometimes this NICS stuff seems totally random. About a year ago I drove four hours to buy a rifle from a particular dealer. Sure enough, the NICS check didn't go through. I'd had dozens of checks go through instantly prior to then, but of course they wait until I drive all day to pick up a gun. I had to go back the next weekend; the dealer said they still hadn't heard anything about my transfer, but thankfully all transfers go through by default in something like 48 hours. I've also had a NICS check take over two hours at a gun show. Now you think this stuff is bad, wait until you go for the Title II transfer. I've been waiting over 14 weeks just for a form 3.

They say waiting builds character :scrutiny:

Why is it that some states Permits to Carry allow someone to bypass the Instant check, and some states permits do not? Minnesota's do not quilify as an exemption.

in Nebraska if you have a handgun purchase permit you don't need to go through a NICS check

It is up to the individual state legislature. They decide. And can change it. Hold their feet to the fire.

I think y'all have a lot of work to do in Minnesota just to keep shall issue. There's a lot of politicians up there who need early retirement. Good many down here, too.

in PA we go through the PA state police check.
i have never been delayed ,but this is how they create their (illegal) gun registry database.

i am just waiting for "fast eddie from Philly" to make it legal.

Why ppl fret over this...ppl seem to forget that anyone can get a delay. It just happens. There's unteen million people in this country so there's likely someone with similar info and that person just may be a bad person. Heck, I know dealers that get delays when they get a NICS check done on them.

The background investigation for the permit also has to meet Federal standards requiring an FBI records check (with fingerprints) at least every 5 years.

There is no finger printing in MN for the CHL. That perhaps is one reason we do not enjoy a lot of reciprocity?

Here you must have a FOID card to touch a firearm or ammo. then a NICS check, which is done by the ISP who never destroy their records. And then a 3 day waqiting period on hand guns and 1 day on long guns. It used to be "days" now somehow it changed to "working days" so if you buy a hand gun on Wed., Thur. or Fri. at a dealer who is not open Sat or Sun it turns to a 5 day wait. This is even on a trade type purchase. Illinois has problems but I will stay and hopefully by working with the other good gun owners will make things better. Jim.

DF357, in MA we don't have NICS after getting an FID (like a FOID) or an LTC/CCW.

Then I wonder who my FLGS is calling whenever I buy I firearm. It sure sounds like a NICS check to me.

Weird. I've never been checked, though I've only bought two firearms...

Could've sworn this was one of the very few upsides to MA licenses.

In PA, we use PICS, which as has been mentioned is used to build a "registry of gun purchases." The state supreme court has, iirc, ruled this to be legal because it "tracks purchases and not people." Mumble.

I'm always kicked out for manual review, but I'm always approved.

In WV we're not subject to such foolishness except when buying a handgun from an FFL.

I'm not really sure of all the ins and outs of reciprocity. I think that most states require that reciprocal state's be at least as restrictive as their own. And some will recognize any state that recognizes them.

Bryon.

Go to www.packing.org

They have a pretty good list by state of reciprocity.

In WV, the NICS check is required on all firearm purchases from an FFL.

It's all in who your buying from!! :p Just gotta have em call back and be nicer! :neener:

Seems that I ALWAYS get delayed... Cept the last time, just a few weeks ago!

I mentioned it to Bob when he was dialing the NICS call. He said how he would try and sweet talk them into it .. From the second he got on the phone he was pourin it on like a single guy at a bar! Well by golly it must have worked. The check did come back "delayed", but the NICS gal took the extra step and ran the info on me right there, since he was so sweet to her!

Plainfield Shooting Supply (Bob Cheek) is an excelent vendor in my book!

I do wish they would alllow Indana CCW holders to do an instant check like most other states. It would sure save me some return trip gas!

Here in the good old state of Georgia if you have a concealed carry permit you are good to go.

Walk in the store, whatever, pick out the firearm of your choice, fill out the registration form, pays your money, and drive on.

Lovely system.

Old thread sorry!
but I have bought several guns through the same dealer.
Well I was at an auction and was apparently denied according to the sales girl. I bought 2 guns at a somewhat low price (Winchester 1400 16 ga. $150 & Remington 1100 12 ga $200)
They resold the guns and both ended up bringing $50 more on the second go around. I think she just lied. The next time I bought a gun I was put on hold. So then I thought I probably was put on hold and she lied because all firearms had to be removed from the property that day.

I agree with the second amendment, so what happened to it????

I'm not feeling sorry for people that get a delay, I get them all the time.

Remember NICS has 3 business days to call back with a verdict or the gun is yours.

Here on the oily gulf coast of Alabama, I have a statewide pistol license
issued by Sheriff Mike Hale of Jefferson County,AL; but I still have to go
thru the NICS system on each and every purchase~! :scrutiny: ;)
