Are there peasants in the USA? Every other country seems to have them- just what the hell is a peasant, technically anyway?

Iraq Claims Downed U.S. Copters, Captives
51 minutes ago
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites) claimed Monday to have shot down two Apache helicopters and to hold two pilots prisoner. "A small number of peasants shot down two Apaches," Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf said. "Perhaps we will show pictures of the pilots."
Iraqi state television showed pictures of only one downed helicopter in a grassy field.
Men in Arab headdresses holding Kalashnikovs automatic rifles danced around the aircraft.
Iraqi state television also showed pictures of two helmets apparently belonging to members of the crew, as well as documents and other papers lying on the ground.
U.S. ground forces have begun engaging the elite Iraqi Republican Guard that ring Baghdad, launching helicopter attacks Sunday night against the Guard's Medina division, a senior military official said.
The helicopter shown on television Monday showed little if any signs of damage, suggesting it had been forced to land by mechanical problems rather than ground fire.
Sahhaf said that the government would consider displaying the other helicopter it claimed to have shot down.
U.S. Central Command said it did not have any comment on the footage. A military spokesman said officials were analyzing the images.
The report of the downed helicopters and new prisoners of war came only one day after al-Jazeera showed video images of five American prisoners of war captured in fighting near the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.
"Yesterday was a black day and the black days will increase," Sahhaf said.
Even so, Sahhaf said that Iraq's leadership ā including Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) himself ā said the POWs would be treated according to the Geneva Conventions.
He rejected accusations that Iraq had violated such accords by allowing Iraqi television to film them and ask questions.
Referring widely televised video images of Iraqi prisoners of war, Sahhaf claimed the men were actually civilians taken away at gunpoint by U.S. forces.
"Is no one supposed to tell them they acted inappropriately?" he asked. "These hypocrites! We tell them we abide by Geneva Conventions."
He accused allied forces of "crying tears of crocodiles," for attacking Iraq and finding the consequences unpleasant.
He also said that Iraq was using all weapons at its disposal.
"We use only weapons that we manufacture or already have," he said, without elaborating.

That helicopter did not look like it was shot down. It looks like it landed there due to mechanical problems. I couldn't see any damage whatsoever. Still no word on the pilots though. At least from our side.
I'm waiting for an airstrike to destroy that helo and hopefully take a few of those Iraqi "peasants," as well.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm a peasant. Hardly anyone goes out of the way to fly over, though.

I thought Peasents were found Mostly in the Midwest.
You know that chicken sized bird with a red ring around its neck, brought here from China. :p
I Don't think anyone shot down the Apache. I pray the pilot and gunner were picked up by one of the Blackhawks on the mission, but I don't think so.

If the Iraqis had the pilot and gunner, they would be all over the news by now; OTOH, if they'd been picked up by the good guys already, we would have heard about that too. I think they're laying low until the advance gets to them. Did anyone else catch the show Saddam's monkeys put on for the media, claiming they'd shot down two pilots in Baghdad, and shooting into brush along the riverside? If they think we're THAT stupid, this war is going to be over in a week.

I think you have peasant confused with pheasant.
peasant: farmers, usually in small towns.
pheasant: Bird, the male has colors, and a white ring, spurs, a green and red face, and cackels(sp) its called a rooster, females have bland colors and are called hens.
Maybe you were joking, in that case, Iām an idiot.

Peasant? Isn't that anyone who is not a LEO and thus cannot be trusted with carrying a pistol or owning eeevil "machine guns"? Nobody but us unworthy serfs.:scrutiny:

Dannyboy nailed it.
Deliberate landing under power or from an autorotation. Hopefully the crew is safe awaiting extraction if not already recvovered.

I can't see an Apache, much less two, getting brought down by an AK. Those things are supposed to take 20mm cannon fire, fer goodness sake!
I think that we are lending just a little to much credibility to Iraqi news.

Bergeron is right.
Apaches can take 20mm cannon fire, even to sensitive parts.
It, like the A-10, really is a "flying tank."
This is a joke, and a pathetic attempt at trying to demoralize us and our troops.
As soon as I saw the title of the thread my BS meter hit the red.
Remember guys, even in a time of war, just because they say it, doesn't make it true....

One more thing:
This is the same Apache that's armed with a 30mm cannon, up to 16 hellfire missles, and they couldn't either:
a) take out the miserable scum who were shooting at them (if this even happened)
b) Just fly away.

By definition the US doesn't have peasants. It has peons, a.k.a. taxpayers. That is because TPTB, everything from the IRS to the local dogcatcher, pee on us daily.

Airwolf,
Are you the reincarnation of Wong Whey ;)
Dustind,
Yup, I was joking. Don't worry tho' I think we've all played the Igit a few time. Well at least I have.
:D
El Tejon,
First you looking at the wrong people as your enemy sir. As a 23 year LEO, I know (even tho I doubt you will beleive it) that the vast majority of LEO's are pro RKBA for all honest Citizens. Can't be arming Phesants tho', we lose too many hunters, and they don't fly well while carring a gun.
Second if the State law says you can't own a full auto then LEOs can't either. One may be issued by their Department but they can't personally own anything you can't.
Cheygriz,
Sorry bud, no Chocolate Eggs for you. I got the furry little bugger a few weeks back. He was assaulting a hen house, and as I didn't have a Holy Hand Genade. I .45ed his furry little ah..... ears. :neener:

In WSJ they mentioned that one Helo took a hit in one of its engines and crew made it home. Probably a DFC for pilot and co-pilot for that feat!
So I suspect the downed helo also took an hits in the engine(s) from ground fire.
peasants? probably disguised Iraqi forces, either the sadaam crazy forces or republican guards.
Hope the downed crew gets extracted ok.

Did anyone else notice that with the Iragi TV footage of the downed AH-64, it seemed the Iraqi official in the middle of the Iraqi farmers was goading them to chant?
Half of them looked bored as hell, and only seemed to start waving their arms and AK's when the camera was on them.

If "peasants" shot that thing down I wanna shop at their gunstore.

Was the inbound ordnance, fired by a later airborne sortie, that destroyed that Longbow Apache before they could disassemble and get a look at the AH-64's innards.

Well - I was gonna jump on that peasant/pheasant giggle getter, but I got in late. Might have known better anyway... with this crew you have to be fast.
Now - just what is a peasant pheasant? And how does he fit an IWF (In Waist Feather) holster so's not to print?

About the only way i could see this with any credibility is that maybe there's still some old Soviet RPGs circulating round those parts.
Even so, and news reports of "elite Iraqi Soldiers"( that is an oxymoron if ever I heard one) dressing in civvies aside, I don't believe it.
We all saw that pic of the Iraqui "soldier" running with the Ak.
Most all of us knew way before this that the entire middle east region is composed of religious shooters(I.e. those who "spray and pray" and possess no fire discipline worth anything)
If it wasnt for gravity they'd have trouble hitting the GROUND.
If the "soldiers" can't do it no way a peasant will.

My bet is that it was an electrical failure, and turned the helicopter into a flying brick. The pilot auto rotated in, and they got out and ran like hell.

I saw this morning before I went to work that the helocopter was taken out last night some time. I just hope those "peasants" were still hanging around when the helo went BOOM.
