After thinking, reading tests, asking gunowners, and posting inquiries on every forum I belong to. I opted for the Savage over the Weatherby, Remington, and Ruger. Money was a consideration, but not the biggest. I wanted my first 308 Varmint Class Rifle to be accurate and also sport a quality scope. On receiving the rifle from my FFL dealer and doing an initial cleaning I was very disappointed with the amount of surface rust removed but the biggest disappointment was the poor condition of the crown on the muzzle. It would snag patch after patch during cleaning to the point that I took it to my gunsmith/dealer and he agreed the muzzle was very poor and without charge to me re-crowned it and floated the receiver.
Due to an accident I have not been able to test the gun but expect it to be a real shooter after this work. Has anyone else had this same experience with their Savage Model 12 rifles?

I just got a Model 12 a week or so ago and it was in new condition and shoots great. No problems at all. I'm very satisfied with mine.

I picked up a 12FLV in 22-250 and have had zero problems to date.

i usually float the receiver before bedding it.
i imagine he probably meant to say barrel, though.

Short or mid long range- that is a work horse - modest I would say.

I have two 12's, a .223 and a .308 both were bought new. Neither had any machining abnormalities at all, none.

Both were (and are) outstanding shooters.

Why, if I may ask, did you keep the rifle or not call Savage at the very least and let them take care of it??? You paid for a new gun, why not let that warranty and Savage's good CS make you happy? Heck, even the best makers let a bad one out of the stable now and again.

Floating the action was something my gunsmith suggested. The modle 12 savage comes double pillar bedded with fully floated bull barrel.

I had considered sending the whole thing back to Savage but my smith reccomended that he take care of it. I have pictures of the before and after muzzle crown that I'll post later along with a letter customer service sent me.

I have been very satisfied with Savage rifles in the past and expect to be so now with this new Savage. Just a bump in the road, I suppose.

It is a pretty widely established tip that Savages need the tang area of the reciever floated to get best accuracy. My stock tupperware stocks were adequately floated under the tang but my B&C Duramaxx needed a little help.

Maybe that's what the gunsmith was talking about?

Other than the low luster finish I've had zero problems. I'd send it back to Savage. There pretty good on customer service. If it'll make feel any better two of last three 700's I've had came complete with serious QC issues........Essex

Low luster? Interesting. Mine was the same, and in the process of rubbing the factory grime off, the Sheath Rust inhibitor was removing layer upon layer of surface rust. The barrel finish now appears to be bright blue finish, and the surface rust is nearly gone. Almost as if I were reblueing the barrel. What was a dull finish now is shiney. It is almost as if the barrel missed one of the processes before installed in the reciever.

Any of you experiencing zero problems with your Savage model 12; check the crown to see if it is rough or sharp. Perhaps the crown is the culprit. Mine was terrible.
