Forgive my ignorance, but the above referenced pic shows the A2 FH on the AR with the gas ports all oriented to the right. Won't this cause the muzzle to get pushed to the left, instead of down to compensate for muzzle rise? What am I missing here?

You might wanna try over on http://www.thefiringline.com/forums

There's a good chance the publisher of the mag might have more insight into this than we would. YMMV

I haven't seen the photo, but I know the slant brake on AK's points up and to the right, driving the muzzle down and left. Since the gun is usually fired from the right shoulder, the leftward push helps keep the gun from tracking to the right when fired? (i.e., the torque on the rifle due to the shooter's mass distribution is up and right rather than just up?)

I didn't see the photo, but some muzzle brakes work by venting gasses rearwards at the sides, which causes a forward directed rocketeting, which is intended to counter the rearwards directed recoil.

Could it be that there's another set of vents on the other side of the barrel?

No, there are not. This is a standard A2 FH, BTW.

The OEM flash hider on my Daewoo K2 was the same way - it had slots on the top and on one side. Not sure why.
