The smith and wesson corporation site is not working or at least not on my computer all of the sudden. what was the model that was chambered in .38 super? Has it been discontiued? would I better be advised to find a 1911 in this caliber performace wise?

There were at least two different guns.
A 686 "L" frame six shooter and a 627 "N" frame with 8-round cylinder.
I don't know if either is in production.
The 686 Super seemed a handy little gun with its titanium cylinder. It was going to be the gun to have for IDPA... until they started requiring major power factor for moon clip guns, based on the success of the 625 and 610.
The 627 Super looks odd with its long barrel, short black cylinder in a stainless frame, and red, white, and blue laminated grip.
I think you'd be better off with a 1911 Super or a .357 revolver.

I have 3 .357 mag revo's and zero semi's so I think you would be right. 8 shot cylinder seems interesting. would like to see a pic of the 686 and especially the 627 but smith's web sight is down.

I didn't have any trouble getting on www.smithandwesson.com but those guns are not shown there anyhow. Out of production I suspect. But you can see the gaudy 8-shot at

The S&W 686 in 38 Super is a great revolver. I thas a STAINLESS STELL cylinder not a Titanium cylinder. Using Ranch Products moon cliup holders it provides a speedier reload than you can expect with a 38 Sp case (shorter case length). Ihave used the 130 gr. Raiunier with 4.5 to 5.0gr W-231 with outstanding accuracy.

You're right, it is steel, guess I had the 646 in my mind.
Unfortunately, establishment of ESR pretty much obsoleted the 686 Super for IDPA; at least I haven't heard of anybody shooting .38 Super Major in one. Have you?
