California/Arizona Shoot - 5 November

August 16, 2005, 11:40 AM
Hey everyone.
I've been thinking for a while how much fun it would be to have a California/Arizona combined shoot. Somewhere in Arizona, near the border maybe.
For me, Yuma would be perfect, but I'd like to hear what would work for everyone else. I was thinking sometime in October or November, once it cools off a bit. What does everyone think of this? Any good ranges near the border, on the AZ side? I'd be willing to give rides to people in the San Diego area, or anywhere along the way. I think this would be a great time, let's get it going!

No idea about ranges near Yuma, but if the timing works for my schedule I'll be there. I'll be elk hunting Oct 14-20 so the weekend of the 15th is out for me. I'll also be scouting for elk Oct 8-10 so that weekend is out for me too. I know my mom was planning to visit sometime in October, but I don't know when exactly just yet, but it will probably be early in that month.

Obviously Thanksgiving will be a problem for most folks.

IIRC Halloween is a Monday this year, so that shouldn't interfere for those of us with little kids.

I guess late October, early November would be best for me.

Having been stationed in Yuma from '97 to '01 I can tell you it is pretty nice, (From the perspective of a Californian.)

Open Carry, and you can discharge a firearm outside city limits as long as you are 1/4 mile or more away from the nearest home.

4 prominent places to shoot.

#1 Adair Range, it is free, has a 1,000 yard range, as well as several other ranges. It is off 95, not too hard to get too.

#2 Not too far from Adair (actually on the way to Adair,) is an old, out-of-use 100 yard Army range that gets used for plinking all the time. Most folks park within 50 yards of the berm and either shoot stuff off the top or stand on the berm and shoot at all the crap behind the berm. Big foothills behind that.

#3 South of MCAS Yuma down 3E just before you go back on Marine land, is one of two rez dump spots. The Cocopah and Quechan dump their appliances and stuff back here, so plenty of targets. Game Wardens only hassled me once there, (Dove do occaisionally fly by,) but once they saw we were just plinking they bid us good day and rolled on.

#4 North of the base, north of Paradise Casino, (The Quechan's Casino) across the All-American Canal, is another Rez dump spot that some shoot at. I wouldn't go here, and I am not even totally sure it is in AZ. It is damn close to the border.

You can get more ammo at Sprague's at the intersection of 4th and 32nd, or Wally World.

One thing to consider, however. It is really close to September. Sept 1st at sunrise in Yuma sounds like Fallujah. Dove season is absolutely huge there. People come from all over, and the bluehair snowbirds are already starting to show up. The Game Warden is likely to be all over the place, checking for Cali peeps acting like idiots or poaching. Not impossible to have fun shooting during that time, but something to consider.

In fact, you could even make it a dove hunt/shoot. Most of the farmer's are pretty easy going about hunting their land, mostly only the Sunkist Orchards have no hunting signs posted.

The season is prety short, though, and if you HAVE to go to Yuma, the later in the year the better.

If the timing is right, I am down to go.

I will try to post a Google Sat pic of the ranges later.

I recently drove through Yuma on the way back from the Grand Canyon. On the way, I passed the proving grounds, and I'm pretty sure I saw a sign for a range out there. Is one of the ones you referred to near there?

August 16, 2005, 07:05 PM
Yes, the first two skirt the Proving Grounds.

I found all three and am working on a map right now.

August 16, 2005, 07:50 PM
Okay here goes:
Here is all 3 ranges in relation to MCAS Yuma and I8:

Here is #1 (Adair)

Here is #2 (the old National Guard Range)

This pic shows how close #2, (The NG Range) and Adair are.

Here is #3 (The Rez Dump that I shot at plenty of times.) Notice the MCAS 500 yard range.

Hope that helps.

Here is a visualization of Jacumba to Adair.

August 20, 2005, 05:57 PM
Bump to attract attention of other CA/AZ folks.

August 21, 2005, 03:03 AM
Did someone say shoot?! :D

August 21, 2005, 04:37 AM
Long drive, but I'd love to be there. We'll see.

IMO, just open land is better than ranges. There's no rules/regulations, and you're more free to do what you want.

August 21, 2005, 10:01 AM
WkW - Where ya been my man? Haven't seen posts from you in a good long while.

I see you've moved up here to the Valley too. Hope you can make this shoot.

August 22, 2005, 01:12 AM
WkW - Where ya been my man? Haven't seen posts from you in a good long while.

Been working that horrible 5 day work week schedule and being made to doing overtime eventhough after the layoff they said absolutely no OT would be needed with the 5 day work week. Well, that job is done, I jumped ship since the only difference between there and the Titanic, is that the Titanic had a band playing...

So I work for Intel up in Chandler now. So the past couple weeks after finding a place to stay has been moving and all that fun stuff. But I will be on a compressed work week again, so I expect to have more time and hopefully more money for this hobby. I haven't touched my reloading bench since about March, right before the 5 day schedule had started.

So I look forward to trying to make it to this shoot.

August 22, 2005, 10:02 AM
I'm now working for Spectrum Astro (now part of General Dynamics) in Gilbert. Left a decent job at Raytheon for a good one here. Big pay raise didn't hurt matters, though with housing costs I don't have as much left over as I would have hoped.

August 22, 2005, 03:37 PM
I'm in. Like sumpnz, I have hunt dates scheduled. I will be in Missouri hunting from 10-23 November. Other than that I'm open to just about anything.

August 22, 2005, 03:40 PM
How does November 5 sound to everyone?

August 22, 2005, 09:54 PM
Sounds pretty good to me, right now at least. I don't foresee anything coming up that weekend.

August 23, 2005, 10:15 AM
Works for me. I will most likely go up Friday eve and stay at the Marine base.

Black Majik
August 23, 2005, 08:22 PM
Sounds fun. It'd be great if we could get all California and Arizona people to come out! :D

August 24, 2005, 08:23 PM
I'll make the drive :)

August 25, 2005, 02:29 PM
If any Tucsonians need a lift then let me know. I'm sure the wife won't go so I will have room in the Bronco.

August 25, 2005, 02:37 PM
If anyone in San Diego, or between San Diego and Yuma needs a ride, let me know.
Is anyone here actually living in Yuma? It'd be helpful to have a local, to help locate a range, and finalize everything.
No_Brakes23, the rez dump location sounds good. I'd like to kill a few cars :)

August 25, 2005, 02:38 PM
Depending on which vehicle I take, and how much hardware people want to bring, I could probably give a lift to 1-3 Phx area folks. I've got a Ford Ranger (regular cab) and a Honda Civic to choose between.

August 25, 2005, 02:49 PM
I'd even consider trying to go I don't know that I can for sure but I'll look into it.

I'm in Arrowhead I dunno if anyone is comming through that area.

September 4, 2005, 04:46 AM
November 5th sounds good to me!!

I live in Buckeye, so the trip won't be to bad!!

The wife and I were thinking about going to Yuma anyway because I had never been there!!

Somebody e-mail ( the directions to me when you get that finalized.

I probably won't be able to bring much more than rimfire!! Things are a little bit tight these days!!

September 4, 2005, 09:54 AM
denfoote - Bring your other guns as well. Who know what sorts of ammo will show up to keep them company.

September 5, 2005, 08:08 PM
Yo dasmi i sure can use a ride. im over here in san diego few miles south of downtown, what would i need to go? extra gas $, extra ammo?

September 5, 2005, 08:09 PM
Some gas money would be nice. Keep checking this thread, we'll coordinate rides as the date gets closer.

September 8, 2005, 04:52 PM
Getting closer, everyone.
Have we decided on Nov. 5?
Have we decided on Yuma?
On a range?
Let's start to nail things down, so we can all plan our lives accordingly.

September 8, 2005, 05:32 PM
The 5th is fine for me. Yuma works. Don't know anything about the ranges there other than what was posted.

Can we have the California people meet together somewhere along the way so that we can all caravan together and not get lost?

Where along the way can we get the LA/OC/SD people together?

September 8, 2005, 06:56 PM
I think that is a very good idea. Somewhere along the 8 east would make sense, I think.

September 8, 2005, 09:17 PM
nov. 5th works for me, How does the Golden Acorn Casino sound for a meeting spot? Im sure parking wouldnt be too much of an issue

September 8, 2005, 09:19 PM
Excellent idea.

September 9, 2005, 01:05 AM
I was gonna suggest The Jacumba Exit gas stations as a good meeting spot due to familiarity and the gas.

As for ranges, the Rez dump is kinda small. 4-5 cars at the loop at most will fit.

The small range (#2 in the pics)is at the end of an off-road vehicle area, so there is a ton of room there. It is an old abandoned range, so no rules or RSOs there. And if any of you are into R/C aircraft, you have to drive right by an R/C aircraft field out there, so you can geek out on that. Those old-timers out thare are pretty serious.

Adair is a range, but I have never seen an RSO or any range personnel out there. Last time I shot there, it was with my Ordnance shop from MCAS Yuma. We had a cooler full of beer out there. I don't plan on drinking and shooting, mind you, just trying to give you an idea of how relaxed it was when I was there.

It has plenty of room, and a 1,000 yard range. It is worth checking out at least. Fortunately all the areas are fairly close together. Oddly enough, Adair also has an R/C field.

I googled Sprague's, the main gun store in Yuma and found this:

Really good info.

September 9, 2005, 01:08 AM
That exit would also work, but the good thing about Golden Acorn, is we could ditch some of the vehicles and carpool from there.

September 9, 2005, 09:48 AM
good point

September 9, 2005, 11:04 AM
Adair sounds pretty cool to me.

September 9, 2005, 11:40 AM
Adair works for me as well.
It has a camping area, which might be an idea for those of us coming from pretty far away.

September 9, 2005, 03:04 PM
Camping area huh. I was planning on crashing on the Marine base but if they have areas to camp then cold ones in the eve around a fire sounds better.

September 9, 2005, 03:15 PM
Camping area huh. I was planning on crashing on the Marine base but if they have areas to camp then cold ones in the eve around a fire sounds better.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Shoot all day Saturday, cold beer, cigars, and steak around a fire, leave Sunday morning. Sounds like a perfect weekend to me!

September 10, 2005, 05:53 PM
Shoot all day Saturday, cold beer, cigars, and steak around a fire, leave Sunday morning. Sounds like a perfect weekend to me! Just have to make sure SWMBO doesn't object to staying overnight, or wants to come along herself (might be a problem with the little one though).

September 10, 2005, 08:16 PM
I don't know if it is still there, but when I left in '01 there was a C&R/Surplus store right across the street from the MCAS Yuma front gate. Owner's name was Rick, lots of info on C&Rs as well as a lot of neat Curios, (Tokarev, Remington made Mosin Nagant, etc, etc). For those of you who still live in free states, (like AZ), he sells EBRs as well, like CETMEs, AK variants, etc.

I bought my M39s from him as a reenlistment present to myself.

His shop is worth checking out, provided it is still there.

September 16, 2005, 09:46 PM
Radio controlled aircraft strip? Can you shoot at the planes? :)

Sounds like Dry Creek. :)

September 16, 2005, 11:16 PM
My rifle is my friend.......... :D

September 19, 2005, 07:38 PM
Anyone else very much looking forward to this?
I'm going to try to bring a bunch of pumpkins, since it'll be right after halloween. Ought to make for a good time.

September 19, 2005, 08:52 PM
Any idea what sort of legal issues there might be in trasnporting our weapons back and forth over a state line?

Obviously it is kosher since Yuma gets swamped with Cali dove hunters on Sept 1, but I was wondering what the rules are, (More concern about coming back in, I know AZ doesn't much care.)

September 19, 2005, 08:55 PM
Unless you get stopped crossing the border to California, I'm not sure how they could prove you brought a weapon back from Arizona. And even so, if it's registered to you in the state of California, I don't there's a problem.

September 20, 2005, 01:33 AM
Is anyone from a bit further up north than San Diego willing to do a carpool thing?

September 20, 2005, 02:22 AM
if it's registered to you in the state of California That's the problem, though. Not everything here, (Long guns for instance, and pre-registration/DROS handguns,) has to be registered. There is a border checkpoint on the way back, and they ask questions sometimes.

September 20, 2005, 02:28 AM
Let them ask, you're already in California by the time you hit the check point, and they can't prove you came from Arizona. I recently drove back from AZ in the middle of the night, with a rifle and handgun in trunk. No questions.

September 26, 2005, 07:13 AM
Any idea what sort of legal issues there might be in trasnporting our weapons back and forth over a state line?

I have travel regularly to/from Yuma. One checkpoint is for Department of Agriculture and the other checkpoint is Border Patrol. Neither of these agencies give a rats arse what you have in your vehicle unless it's fruits or illegals.

Additionally, you have no obligation to declare that you have these guns to either agency as you cross. Dep of Agriculture won't search your vehicles and Border Patrol won't look for anything without arms or legs (rare exceptions).

Bury your burners in luggage or under other items without making it look like you are hiding anything - you are only doing this to avoid nosy questions that they ask not because it's illegal.

My own personal experience is that I once brought back a small box with four handguns in it. The box stayed in the front seat somewhat opened for the whole drive. I stopped at both checkpoints and never had any issues.

I never have any problems coming back from Phoenix either (Dep of Ag checkpoint after you cross the river).

September 27, 2005, 06:58 PM
McClure-Volkmer says you can transport firearms to any other state where they're legal.

Don't sweat it. There's nothing legal in California that's not legal in Arizona.

October 6, 2005, 11:57 AM
Bump for good measure.

October 6, 2005, 12:10 PM
It's getting closer, everyone.

October 6, 2005, 01:18 PM
On my calander. However my upcoming elk hunt is taking up most of my spare brain cells. Mmmmm ... tenderloin kabobs ... elk heart ... elk loaf ... mmmmm. (Looks for napkin to clean up drool).

October 8, 2005, 05:18 AM
Heh, a friend of mine in the Great White North just blasted a moose yesterday.

October 13, 2005, 11:49 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, we're getting closer to November 5.
So far, we've decided on Adair, and that's about it, right?
What time on the fifth? 10 AM?
San Diego members, do you want to meet somewhere and carpool, or at least convoy out there?
Who is going for sure?
I will be there, anyone else?

October 13, 2005, 12:12 PM
I can't make it to this shoot, but maybe in the future we could try and organize a shoot somewhere out in the desert rather than at a range?

October 13, 2005, 09:09 PM
I would like to head up there Friday eve. Camp out Friday night and then shoot Sat and possibly head back that eve. If not, a Sunday return is fine.

October 13, 2005, 09:51 PM
That would work fine for me, but if that's the case, let's decide, so I can skip out of work early on Friday.

October 14, 2005, 04:09 PM
LennyJ, the "National Guard" range might as well be out in the desert. It is an abandoned range, pretty much a berm with a bunch of crap thrown over into the butts area. No working target stands or anything. You gotta offroad a little to get there, and there are plenty of offroad trails for when you aren't shooting.

And best of all, it is just minutes south of Adair.

You could go goof off at the NG "range" and come back to Adair for the camping.

There is also plenty of camping and fishing at nearby Lake Mitry, and Lake Martinez, and Senator Wash has boating and fishing.

Any of y'all with decent 4x4 that can ford less than 2 feet of water can have a ton of fun around Yuma, it is like one big off-road trail. My 2WD Cherokee did fine out there, even fording some of the streams.

I was going to have a work conflict, but I am putting my 2 weeks in tomorrow, so I might be able to make it.

October 15, 2005, 06:50 PM
Any of y'all with decent 4x4 that can ford less than 2 feet of water can have a ton of fun around Yuma
That's right up my alley. Gonna bring the gas hog. 95 Bronco with a 4" lift that has taken me in and out of some precarious locations. :D

October 17, 2005, 02:02 AM
Hey I can make it, what are the exact dates and how long? Are we spending the whole weekend in AZ? How much money would i need?

slightly off topic: I finished shooting out of jacumba today (it was storming on the way there but dry at the range) My SKS suddenly stopped shooting semi-auto. I have turned the gas port on and off and have been switching from wooden stock to fiberforce stock within a 6 month period. I havent had this problem in the past and i'm using wolf hp 7.62x39. I oiled it up and checked for dirt, still doesnt work. Does anyone know the solution for this? Thanks

October 17, 2005, 02:05 AM
I'll probably go out there Friday, and camp overnight. The actual shoot is on Saturday, the 5th. I might stay overnight Saturday, and leave Sunday morning.
If you want to ride with me, just pitch in some gas money. Also, I'm bringing a cooler with beverages, and some food. Anyone else who wants to bring drinks and food, it would be a good idea. If someone has a barbeque, that'd be great.
Can we get a final count of who will be there, and when?

October 17, 2005, 02:08 AM
what time are you leaving friday?

October 17, 2005, 02:11 AM
Depends on when everyone else is showing up. If no one is getting there until Saturday, I'll leave early Saturday morning. If I do leave Friday, probably around 3 or 4, if I can get off work early. I'd like to get to Adair while there's still some light.

October 18, 2005, 01:01 PM
I'll most likely leave on Friday afternoon so I can get camp set up before sun down.

If anyone needs a ride from Tucson, you better holler pretty soon.

October 18, 2005, 01:03 PM
LennyJoe, what time do you think you'll be there? I'll try to get off work and meet you.
ATTENTION! Anyone who needs a ride from San Diego, or some place between San Diego and Yuma, speak now.

October 18, 2005, 05:25 PM
Around 6.

October 19, 2005, 06:41 PM
Do we have a good head count? If it's just you and me then it almost isn't worth the drive. Standing by for words.

October 19, 2005, 06:42 PM
Agreed. Head count everyone.

October 19, 2005, 07:21 PM
I'm in. Tentative on my German buddy, depending on his schedule.

Anyone who's on the way from Mesa let me know if you'd like to carpool.

October 20, 2005, 12:24 AM
Im one of the san diegans that would like to go but i get off work 4:30pm friday. If need be i can take off an hour early. I would also like to catch a ride with someone

October 20, 2005, 12:42 AM
I can wait for you, as long as LennyJoe has a nice big campfire going so we can find the spot after dark.
Nobrakes23, you in?

October 20, 2005, 10:10 AM
No problem mate. I might have another buddy coming as well. We'll have some Bud Lite on ice and the fire crackling.

Also, if the bird Gods are nice this weeekend then we might have some quail for the pan.

Hey Dasmi, let me check my book, i would love to go. if I can get the time.

October 22, 2005, 08:41 PM
I just requested the time off from work, so I should have a response next week on Wednesday.

October 24, 2005, 01:59 AM
What is everyone bringing?
I've got my Mosin-nagants, a 91/30 and an M44, my Ruger Service Six, and my little Mossberg 7022 Plinkster.

October 24, 2005, 03:20 AM
7.62x39 sks, 12ga Mossberg, 22lr saturday night special & a Taurus .45

How much ammo should we bring? are we shooting for a day or two?

October 24, 2005, 10:33 AM
AR, SKS, Bolt rifle and 4 autoloader pistols.

October 24, 2005, 11:12 AM
2 auto loader pistols (.40 and .45), 1 magnum revo (.44mag), Miss Kaysa ('96 Swedish mauser), and probably the elk slayer (CZ 550, 6.5x55). I don't have a whole lot of ammo, especially for the rifles, but will bring what I can. I sense a trip to Wal-Mart for WWB for the .4x calibers though.

October 24, 2005, 11:59 AM
How much ammo should we bring? are we shooting for a day or two?
As much as you can. I'm brining a few hundred rounds for the mosin-nagants, and several thousand for the .22. Hopefully I can afford a bulk pack of .38 special for the revolver before I come.

October 24, 2005, 02:05 PM
Should have around 300rds of .223, 400rds of 7.62, 200rds of .45, 300rds of 10MM. Also gonna bring the .22 for the heck of it.

October 24, 2005, 02:23 PM
Let's not forget targets.
I've got an old wide format dot matrix printer that needs to go. I'll try to pick up a load of surplus halloween pumpkins as well.

October 27, 2005, 01:04 PM

October 28, 2005, 12:15 PM
Preacherman added the date to the thread to see if we get anymore interest.

So far its myself, dasmi, sumnz, WhoknowsWho (possibly),Kevin33 and possibly Hammerhead Shark.

Anyone else?

October 28, 2005, 01:55 PM
Hello everyone! I'm in Yuma for a business trip and I'm flying out on the morning of the 5th (noon flight) but I'd at least like to stop by and meet some people.

I saw the signs for Adair on the way to work this morning but I don't know my way around out here...if anyone is willing to help me out, please PM me. I have my cell and a rental car so I can get around, but I have no guns with me. :(

October 28, 2005, 04:02 PM
esheato, a couple of us will be camping out at the Adair range friday eve. I am planning on getting there before dark so I can figure out the area.

PM me with your cell phone number and I'll give you a holler when I get in the area.

October 28, 2005, 04:06 PM
Lennyjoe, could you also call me?
PM incoming for with phone number.

October 28, 2005, 06:57 PM
I'm going to call the airlines and see if I can bump my flight later in the afternoon....It would be fun to spend more than an hour or two with y'all.

See ya on Saturday...

October 30, 2005, 01:01 AM
I have esheato and dasmi's cell numbers. The wife decided not to attend so I will be solo. I will be at the camping area before dark and will have coffee made bright and early Sat morning.

October 30, 2005, 01:08 AM
Need me to bring anything?

October 30, 2005, 04:56 PM

October 30, 2005, 06:01 PM
Dasmi, I get off work 4:30 pm (in kearny mesa ) and get home (national city) by 5pm. Would you pick me up from my house or should I go out to you? Or meet up at Golden Acorn?

November 1, 2005, 01:46 AM

Sorry guys, I couldn't get the time off to go.:cuss: Have fun there. hopefully I will be able to go next time.:(

November 1, 2005, 12:10 PM
Ok, Anyone who is riding with me, listen up.
I have two seats available, possibly three, but I won't know until Thursday.
Meet me at the Alpine Regional Center at 5:45.
It's at 1620 Alpine Blvd, Alpine CA, 91901.
We can leave the cars there over night.
I'll be in the tan, older Mercedes 300D, and I'll be parked near the entrance. If you're planning on riding with me, or following me out, please PM me your name, and type of vehicle, so I know who to look for. I have a farily large trunk, so plenty of room for guns and small coolers. Bring ammo, guns, targets, food, and whatever you need to sleep over night, outside. Also pitch in some money for gas, if you would, diesel isn't cheap these days.

November 1, 2005, 03:27 PM

November 1, 2005, 04:08 PM
Might just be you, me and esheato.

November 1, 2005, 06:15 PM

November 1, 2005, 06:18 PM
Kevin33, are you still in? Riding with me?

I haven't mentioned this to my wife in a while, but she did say she didn't object when I did talk to her about this several weeks ago. If she doesn't have anything she desperatly needs me for I'll still be there. I may have to head out early Saturday, but if I can get out of here Friday evening I will certainly do so. If I do head out Friday, keep your stomachs from getting too full before I arrive. I'll bring some elk steaks with me to grill over the fire. Maybe some homebrew too.

It's what, ~3 hours to Yuma from the east side of Phx? Probably won't make it much if any before 9PM. Even if I'm out of work by 5, getting home and loaded up and stopping at Wal-Mart for some WWB will make it hard to be on the road before 6PM. At least I'll be on the good side of the road when heading out, at least until I get halfway through Phx.

November 1, 2005, 06:37 PM
sumpnz, hope to see you there.

November 1, 2005, 06:48 PM
Could someone post directions to Adair (we did settle on Adair, right?).

November 1, 2005, 09:25 PM
Hey Dasmi,

Of corse im in. I cant ditch shooting up things in a gun friendly state. i'll pm my info to you. I also have 2 printers i would like to get rid of. Also when are we meeting at that alpine location? Friday? 5:45pm?

November 1, 2005, 09:49 PM
Sumnz, go to page 1. Take a right off of Hwy 8 on Fortuna rd. Head north till you run into Hwy 95. Go right on 95 and head north on it til you run into the range. Range will be on your left. I'll be there hanging out in the white/blue bronco. I am gonna take some camping gear and a soft futon matt and crash in the back of the truck like I do during deer season.

I plan on taking enough wood for a good bonfire and some cold beers. Will keep the grill hot for them there steaks. :D

November 2, 2005, 01:00 AM
Not gonna be able to make it:(

I was really looking forward to it, too.

Take lotsa pics.

November 2, 2005, 01:27 PM
Started another thread just in case this one gets out of hand and to add more exposure to the get together.

November 2, 2005, 02:25 PM
I have TWO SEATS available.

November 2, 2005, 09:08 PM
I'll leave work 4:30pm hopefully there wont be any traffic off the 8-east. see ya there.

November 3, 2005, 05:59 PM
My car is now full. My little brother and a friend of his are tagging along...well he's 20, so not so little I guess.
Kevin33, you've still got a seat reserved. Anyone else from San Diego who wants to follow me out, post on this thread or PM me.

November 3, 2005, 11:11 PM
Anyone following or riding with me, I will be in a white F-150, NOT a tan mercedes. Not enough cargo room in the Benz for this trip.

November 3, 2005, 11:20 PM
So what's the total head count now? My friend is to busy, so that leaves me, Lenny, dasmi, dasmi's brother and friend, ehseato and Kevin. Less'n my 5calculus classes have totally worn off, that's 7. I'm guessing esheato won't be there Friday night. In light of that, how much elk should I bring. I've pulled one large roast out that can be cut into some good steaks. Will that be enough?

November 3, 2005, 11:31 PM
I count seven as well, though my brother's friend isn't yet confirmed.
Last call, does anyone need me to bring anything?

November 4, 2005, 12:12 AM
So if I'm reading this right,
from San Diego, 8 east to Fortuna Rd, left.
North until 95, right on 95, north to the range.

November 4, 2005, 09:36 AM
Sounds like the right place. I have my Bronco loaded and ready to go minus weapons. Will leave around 1 local.

I have wood for campfire but no grill other than my camp grate that goes over a fire.

Can someone bring either a grill or charcoal so we can grill them there elk steaks.:D

I might go to the gun show on Saturday after we're done shooting. I am looking for a .44, .454 or .480 and want to trade my BHP for one.

November 4, 2005, 12:50 PM
Change in plans: I should be done packing up my equipment by 5pm. Sooo, I should be able to make tonights get together.

Lenny, give me a call when you get here and I'll come out.

BTW, this is probably the last time that I'll get a chance to check THR before tonight...see ya soon.

November 4, 2005, 12:50 PM
I might be delayed a couple of hours. Hopefully I will get there before sun down. Don't want to be driving around the desert in the dark trying to find a camping spot.

At least I won't have to worry about running into any bad guys. With being armed to the teeth and all.:D

Ed, I'll holler when I get off the highway.

November 4, 2005, 01:10 PM
I've got a charcoal grill.

November 4, 2005, 07:14 PM
Is this an organized range, or do we shoot at whatever?

I have a small clay thrower and some clays, also some fencing material to hang clays on as simple reactive rifle/pistol targets. Bring this stuff, or paper targets, spinners, or ???

Shotguns (for shooting clays), rifles, handguns?

This is only a few miles from I-8, right?

November 4, 2005, 07:16 PM
I don't think it's an organized range.
Seems to be pretty near I-8.
Are you coming from San Diego?

November 4, 2005, 07:27 PM
It's mapped as the National Guard Range on Google Maps, though of course that could mean anything.

Yes, if we (Ellie and I) go, we're going from San Diego.

She's pretty sick, but kinda stoked on going. I'm up for anything, though I might need to clean my sixgun a bit before shooting it.

If we can throw clays, I'm always up for it. Good hunting on the way out there, too. Any idea what to do with a quail once you've shot it? I don't know. But barbecuing it might work. :)

You're in Alpine?

You camping out in AZ?

November 4, 2005, 07:30 PM
Ya, I'm in Alpine.
I pm'd Ellie the address where my group is leaving from, in Alpine.
We're rolling out at 6:15 PM, tonight. Throwing clays shouldn't be a problem.
LennyJoe is on his way there now to setup camp. If you want to follow me out, meet me at the address I sent to Ellie, before 6:15. I'm leaving my office in 15 minutes to get packed, and I won't be back at a computer before heading out. I also sent Ellie my cell phone numbers, in case you need better directions.

But barbecuing it might work
I'm bringing a charcoal grill.

November 5, 2005, 01:37 AM
Wasn't able to get the time off, being a new employee and all. Was looking forward to some elk and seeing you all there, but I am going to miss this one. Take pics! Have a good time!

November 5, 2005, 09:31 PM
It was a good time. Will post pics after I take momma to get some dinner. :D

November 5, 2005, 09:54 PM
Yep, good time was had by all.
Ellie, ArmedBear, Sumpnz, Kevin33, (who isn't really named Kevin, his friends just call him that) LennyJoe, myself, my brother, his friend, and my dad were in attendance. Pictures coming soon.

November 5, 2005, 10:04 PM
Hey Lenny, I've got your chair.

Dasmi - Any sign of the grill and water jug?

All - Had lots of fun. Let do this again in Jan/Feb kind of time frame.

November 5, 2005, 10:08 PM
Nope, sorry.
Kevin33 thought maybe the border partrol snagged them.

November 5, 2005, 10:47 PM
Heck, forgot the chair. Oh well, will get it on the next one.

Gonna start a new thread on General talk to post pics for all to see.

Pictures and captions can be found here.
