Brass casing goo

Well,

For the first time in my 30yrs years of guns I finally had brass on six .45 caliber rounds in my Model 25 dissolve and gum up in the chambers. Luckily it had only been about 4 weeks since I cleaned my guns when I noticed it so they didn't sit in there forever. I guess too much Hoppes No.9 left in the cylinders. I could have sworn I swabbed em out with a dry patch, guess I didn't.

I cleaned it again with Hoppes, a brass brush and swab, they shine like always now. Word....don't ever leave rounds in the chambers with damp solvent.

Wow, never even thought of that happening before.

Your problem is obvious. A case is part of a cartridge. A casing is part of a sausage. Sausages are greasy. :neener:

Ammonia is the only thing that I've seen dissolve which will dissolve brass.

Ammonia is used in cleaners to remove copper from the jacketing .Brass is a copper /zinc alloy .Brass will then also be attacked by ammonia !!! The claeners should be removed after use.

When I get in a hurry while cleaning my GP-100 (sits in my nightstand when not at the range) and forget to swab out the cylinders after a cleaning with Hoppes my copper jackets will start to get green goo on them. If I swab out the cylinder with a gun oil (Sheath) after wards I don't have this problem.

My SD rounds are .357 158 Speer Gold Dots, of course we all know these come in nickle plated cases but I haven't yet seen the cases corrode.
