Used the search function, the newest impressions nearly a year old, the oft-referenced Gunblast article is from 2002... now that S&W's new 317 has been out for awhile and been in people's hands, what's the verdict?

I like it. My wife likes it. Like the sights, also. Fun gun to shoot when you want a change from larger caliber shooting. No complaints whatsoever from me or my bride.

I am not fond of the front sight - it's a little large and its rounded top makes a precise sight picture difficult to obtain. The DA pull is heavy (aren't they all these days?). My wife likes the gun though - it's easy for her to handle & operate. I prefer the 617, but in the "kit gun" role the 317 wins hands down.

I have one..good gun for light weight wise---the trigger DA pull sucks and it also sticks for opening the cylinder even before firing, but I woudl not trade it for anything--usually carry it plus my carry gun when out in the field. I bought it for a really light .22 that can shoot all sorts of Aguilla speicalty loads--

I have a pre-fiber optic sight version. I like it a lot, it's a fun little gun. As noted, the trigger is too heavy, but this is eassily remedied with a spring kit from Wolff (www.gunsprings.com, or from MidwayUSA or Brownell's). It took me about an hour and a half ro do the swap, I had never worked on a revolver before. Just be sure to test thoroughly after the swap to make sure it goes 'bang' with all the kinds of ammo you may use.
