Lately i've been tempted to get one of these. Can anyone tell me how they compare to 1911's -- ease of field stripping, accuracy, reliability, accessibility of mags?

I have one and it is truly an excellent shooter. It strips like any Smith auto. They are like 1911's in caliber only. Mine is at the Gunsmith getting the trigger lightened from 6 1/4 pounds to around 4 pounds (my finger is still a bit sore after three matches last saturday pulling that heavy thing). Mags have been an issue lately. See my post for more info. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=151706
I really like this gun and would recommend it. It would be even nicer if it comes with at least the two mags it originally came with. I'm sure glad mine did.

Thanks, 649
Do you need a wrench to strip it? How difficult has it been to find the mags? How are the sights?

No tools needed until you get to detail stripping the frame (like most S&W's).
Mags are readily available from Midway, BUT, as my earlier post explains, I'm sorting out proper followers (new) that will lock the slide back on empty for more than a few reloadings. I'll update that post when I see what Numrich sends out this week. The sights are excellent, sort of like big, extended Novaks.

Josh,
Do 745 mags also fit the 645? Will the 4506 mags fit the 745? I'm a little worried I'll only be able to find promags.

Yes. The 645/745/4506 all use the same mag. Still available from S&W: Item #236750000.

Good Luck...

I don't have a 645 or 745, but my 4506 has proven to be exceptionally accurate and extremely reliable. Very solid, well made guns. That's why I own 4 of them (5906, 4006, 1006, 4506)
