Iraq: What Kind of Rifle

Hey guys, what kind of rifle is this?
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2005/08/17/international/17cnd-iraq.1.650.jpg
It looks like a Draganov or something, but I am wondering how effective it would be (with a small 10 round clip) in guarding a bomb scene. And whats the deal with the Assault Weapons Ban thumbhole stock???
Is there such a surplus of them out there that we could outfit Iraqis with them cheap (assuming this guy is an Iraqi - he looks sort of westernized ie: no facial hair)

AFAIK that looks like a "real dragunov." IE the location of the mag and the forend. But i'm also pretty sure that they only come issued with the thumbhole stock.

Just because that was all we were allowed for 10 years, doesn't mean that some people don't like it better.

That appears to be a Dragunov SVD in 7.62x54mm. The SVD is a DMR type rifle and has always had a 10 round mag and the thumbhole stock. There are newer versions that include a bull-pup configuration which have done away with the thumb hole stock. I believe the Iraqi army has the choclolate chip type uniforms so this is an Iraqi.

Just popped into my mind, there was an article in Shotgun News a while back about Iraqi-made Druganov-type snipers. Perhaps this is one?

some varient on an SVD with a very ugly stock set.
Magazine. It's a magazine.
Sorry, pet peeve.
I looked this up in a dictionary once and it said that a definition for "magazine" is a box or container that feeds ammunition into a rifle while a definition for "clip" or "ammunition clip" is a device that holds loose ammunition for storage.
as for me- I stopped caring a long time ago. People are gonna call em clips until they die. No point in trying to change em

That is a Dragunov SVD (http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sn18-e.htm), or at least a copy of it, as they were/are manufactured in Iraq, called "Al Kadesiah" (don't know what that means). Obviously, it's not an assault rifle. It's a semi-auto rifle that fires the 7.62x54Rmm cartridge, which is equivalent in power to the 7.62x51mm. It was used by the Soviets in a squad sniper role; not really a sniper by US standards, but a guy with a bit of training and a longer range rifle in each squad is a nice thing to have. More like what we would call a "designated marksman". Anyway, that's why it has the thumbhole stock and 10-round magazine.
Why this guy is standing next to a bomb scene with one, I don't know. Looks to me to be an Iraqi soldier, as they get US BDUs and such now. It would probably be more effective for him to be concealed somewhere nearby, but if an SVD is all you have, I guess that's what you use.

:scrutiny: I too think that magazine would be a bit small unless he was parked on a roof ;)

I think John Kerry would dissagree with that -

anyhow- at least he's practicing more trigger safety than Mr. Kalashnikov

I think John Kerry would probably be more concerned with the broader, bull???? political definition of "Assault Weapon" as opposed to "Assault Rifle". But then, does anyone here really give a flying crap what John Kerry thinks?
I'm sure a LOT of people would dissagree with that one.
I guess that depends on your definition of "a lot". At any rate, they'd be arguing about a difference of about 200 fpe tops, load-specific. No big deal.
7.62x51mm US M80 (from M-14): 150 FMJ @ 2750 fps = 2501 fpe
7.62x54Rmm 7N14 (from SVD): 151 FMJ @ 2723 fps = 2485 fpe

A Dragunov SVD voter here too, not that it matters now.
I wanna know why that soldier has one though.

Is it an Iraqi copy or Chinese???

That appears to be an original Soviet SVD. The magazine is, anyway. The Iraqi produced mags have a palm tree stamp that is very distinctive.

The butt stock looks like an original pattern but not original wood. Most SVDs I've seen had stocks identical to the forestock on that weapon.
As for the weapon, it's an SVD. Whether Chinese or Russian can't be discerned from the photo.

I'm guessing the old stock/forgrips got cracked and he needed to can parts off another rifle.
just a thought.

Iraqi national guard maybe? Taking what they used to use.

Didn't the Russian SVDs come with synthetic furniture?
Might be a Chinese or Iraqi (Al Kadesh?). Nothing to say they aren't using magazines other than just what the Iraqi army issued.
As for why he's there. . .ever think it's a staged photo (i.e. he's NOT in his "real" position)? He's probably there with others armed with AKs/RPKs, etc, and someone wanted to photograph him with his (darn cool) looking rifle.
The "nominal" specifications of the 7.62x54R are exactly the same as the 7.62x51. Whether the issue ammo lives up to this is another story, but I'll bet it's not enough difference to matter.

OK, yeah forgot about the Palm trees on the Iraqi gun mags, and IIRC, the mags were not interchangeable.
